    Mr Paul is correct.

By comparison to the poor from a very large portion of the world, the poor in America, indeed, don't have it so bad. It's amazing how many of them are overweight, have at least one car, 2 TVs, and a cellphone with unlimited minutes and internet access. Many of them have turned down jobs either because they don't like working or prefer the government dole more.

It makes a good soundbite for dispensation by the liberal bleeding heart machine, but the facts are on his side.

Having lived in Mexico and spent time in St. Kitts, St. Nevis, and recently visiting Ukraine, I can tell you that there are very few here in America who are truly poor.

But, by putting "poor" in context, you just took away one of Robert's talking points.

(disclaimer: I know that being unemployed, or having trouble paying bills, or even facing forclosure, is a terrible thing. But, compared to the billions on Earth whose survival is not even a sure thing, even our "poor" are well-to-do.)

Besides which - the poor stay poor because the democrats in power like it that way.

It keeps them in power - don't you know?

Keep the poor - especially the Black poor - on the goverment dole to ensure their votes.

The democrats are working hard to expand that captive voter base to include poor Mexicans.

    Such a terrible conversation.

Lest we forget there are individuals throughout this country suffering tonight in poverty. If you, ensconced in your middle class American hegemony, need reminding of the severity of poverty and the reality of its grip on individuals just go to the other side of the town or city. Then I challenge you to do away with your creature comforts and live on the streets, live in squalor, live with the threat of injury or death, live as an outsider to the rest of culture then you begin to see the devastation that poverty brings.

When we forget the reality of poverty among us we lose our sensitivity to being the people God has called us to be in Christ.

Yes Preaching Jesus, why don't you sell your computer, your car, your home, your possessions and go and live with these poor (give them all your money from your liquidation)

When I seriously see someone complaining that they are poor, they "don't have food in the cabinets" and they are feeding their family "rice for the third day in a row" - their kids "go to bed complaining that they are hungry".....yet they are telling me this on their computer with internet access and they refuse to work, I see the difference. Where we do missions, parents sell their daughters to the garbage men for sex so that they have first dibs on what comes out of that truck in order to possibly find food, clothing, materials for shelter. Another location gives us their best food and go without. Their best food? Homemade crackers and peanut butter for breakfast and rice and beans for lunch and dinner. Every day. No vegetables. No dairy. No seasonings. Just crackers, peanut butter, rice and beans. And that is their best. Computers? Not at all. A chance for a job but they won't take it? Nope - they work. Hard. There is a HUGE difference between the vast majority of the "poor" in the US and the poor elsewhere. We expect to have health care, shelter, food, clothing. Other parts of the world? Those are not at all guaranteed.

Except for exceptional cases of bad luck and/or disabilities, there is no economic excuse for any adult born in the US to be living on the street or going hungry.

The poor in the US have every KIND of consumer good that the rich people have. The big difference is that rich people don't stand in lines unless they are going on vacations that require scheduled air lines.

Very true - there are numerous government and private/religious assistance organizations to give help.

Very few times I've agreed with Bill but he is right. And, yet we would have those who would try to make us feel guilty for even suggesting that most are in poverty by choice rather that circumstance.

According to the government, any income under $22,000 per year for a family of 4.

But that figure does not include the value of government assistance programs like food stamps.

If it did, the dollar figure would be much higher, perhaps as much as $35,000 per year. Maybe more. It would vary from state to state.

Some folks think they can just throw the "poverty" word around so they can automatically drum up sympathy. It is far overused and abused.

I'll bet all those people eating at soup kitchens are only there because they are sick of cooking at home . . .

    Are you people for real?
