In the Bible, God often uses types to teach us truths about the things represented by the types(the antitype). For example Isaac was a 'type' of Christ, in that he foreshadowed some aspects of the Messiah. Here is a link to a list of verses that show this relationship: http://www.bible.org/illus.asp?topic_id=1606

This type is very deep and exposes a lot of information that was hidden in the scriptures. There are many types of Christ throughout the Old Testament, as well as other types.

    Heb 8:5
Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

God is very protective of the types that He has established, the tabernacle being an example. God has revealed more of His son in the tabernacle, and it was imperative that these types be preserved when the tabernacle was constructed. Thus the admonition to follow the pattern that Moses was given. If Moses had changed anything in the construction, the type would have been affected.

Moses got in trouble for messing up one such picture of Christ, when he struck the rock twice instead of speaking to it as God commanded him. The rock was a picture of Christ, who was to be smitten once as sacrifice for our sins. Afterward, God told Moses to speak to the rock, which was a picture of us coming to Christ who is now our advocate, making intercession for us, and confessing our sins and asking for forgiveness. He does not have to be sacrificed again. For disobeying God in this matter, Moses was not allowed to enter into the promised land.

    Numbers 20
8 Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
9 And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.
10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?
11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.
12 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

Seeing that God puts such emphasis on pictures and types, what are some other pictures that we can learn from, and how much can we rely on types to teach us about their antitypes?

My absolute favorite "type" is found in Leviticus 14. It is the ritual of the cleansed leper.

It is a perfect picture of sin, the sacrice of Jesus, His atonement for sinners on the cross, and His resurrection.

When I first found it years ago, I was astonished.

    Peace-

Jesus Himself mentioned the snake that Moses lifted up on the rod, as a type of Him.

"And as Moses liftd up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up" John 3:14

I think this is an excellent picture of salvation by grace through faith. The Israelites only had to look at the serpent, and they were saved from death. They couldn't do anything else. Similarly, we must look to Jesus for our salvation by His death on the cross, and cannot do anything on our own to affect salvation.

    While some would say that this;
    Heb 4:9
There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
    Heb 4:10
For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
    Heb 4:11
¶ Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
...applies to the "rest" of heaven; I would counter that it is more accurately a picture or type of the Millenial Rest for the faithful believers. Hence, the admonition to labour to enter into it.

    In HIS service;
    Jim

The 7 feasts of Israel are types and are also of prophetic significance. [IMG]

    General comment:

Must be very careful that all suggested types are consistent with doctrine that is clearly stated elsewhere in the Bible. Types do not ESTABLISH doctrine, they support it!

A.W. Pink was a tremendous man of God, but he got completely carried away with typology and found types just about everywhere and in everything.

types is one of my favroite topics...some of my favorite types.

Joseph (OT) as a type of Christ. Highly recommended reading: JOSEPH Makes Me Think of JESUS Author William MacDonald and a book by Ada Haberson -- i think that name of the book is 'types', but i'm not sure.

the Tabernacle. we can discuss types in the tablernacle for a very long time. everything from its construction, the furniture, the service and even the layout of the tribes camped around it point to Christ.

then there are also types in OT stories. like the gospel in the story of Mephibosheth.

Best quick source I could find to explain it:

    source

In other words, the first three feasts (spring) represent Christ and His redemption. The middle feast represents the church age. The last three feasts (fall) represent the things to come after the church age. [IMG]

How about the type of Christ in the slave that is pierced because he loves his master (Ex.21:1-6)?

Daniel (in Daniel Chapter 6) is a `type' of Christ. Consider
    the following:

Neither Daniel or Jesus has any `recorded' sin. (Yes, I know Jesus
was sinless and Daniel was not)
    Both were betrayed.
Both were sentenced to die, even though they were innocent.
Both were placed in a hole-in-the-ground. Jesus in a tomb, Daniel in
    the den.
Both holes had stones placed over the openings and both stones were
    sealed.
Both stones were rolled away, both men came out of their respective holes (or tombs) alive. Jesus, of
course was resurrected from the dead and Daniel wasn't harmed by the
    lions.
Both men were then exalted. Daniel was restored to his position of second
in command, second only to the king that sat on the throne. Jesus
ascended to heaven where He sat down on the right hand of God, who was
    on the throne!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What about the Ark of the Covenant as a type of Mary?

I have heard a preacher talking about the length of the cords and knots and fasteners on the Tabernacle. Evidently interesting to him, but not to anyone else!

    Ps104_33 & Dr. Bob,

Could you elaborate? I never heard of these Mary types before.
