What did God mean when God told Satan that Job was "righteous?"

He was in Christ ! All the Elect are made Righteous by the obedience of One Rom 5:19

19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

That goes for both NT and OT Believers. Job had Faith in Christ ! Job 19:25

25 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:

 

In scriptures, and especially in the OT, the term "righteous" is often used to describe a person who walks with God in obedience as a pattern of life, but who has still sinned, and can still sin. It's one of the confusing things about the OT, but once recognized, it helps us immensely to try to figure out which usage applies.

God says Job is righteous in Job...psalsm say "there is none righteous".

A further question is "Did Job sin in his protests against God, which he then repented of? Or does the phrase "He did not sin with his lips." apply to the whole book of job, or just the first 2 chapters?

Thats True, except those God views Righteous through the obedience of Christ ! Read my post again, it seems you did not read it carefully or you just do not understand it !

 

In the preceding verses, it seems that "rightous" has something to do with they way the people lived...it does not necessarily mean "SINLESS"...but their general pattern of life.

Then Even in Job, There are 2 different uses of the word righteous...in 17:9 (above) There ARE righteous men...in 15:14 below, there are not (as in "there are none Righteous,"

While True perfect righteousness comes only through imputation from Christ, there seems to be a lifestyle of righteousness that was readily recognized by those in the OT as something to be emulated and admired...I believe this is what Job is refered to as having.

 

They lived by Faith in Christ. The Righteous are so as declared by God,those whom Christ performed His Obedience for. Rom 5:19

The Just shall live by Faith, thats True from OT to New ! Hab 2:4

Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.
