Baptist pastor Rick Warren is privileged to lead our entire nation in prayer at the upcoming inauguration. This is a summary of what I sent him as my thoughts on prayer in the most public forum January 20th.

Paul suggested a possible outline to such prayer. "First of all, then, I intreat each of you to make requests, use earnest words, intercede, and use grateful language to God be made for everyone - for kings and all who are in high positions - so that we [believers] may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior"

    So his prayer should include
1 - requests for God's hand, blessing, righteousness, repentance, wisdom, etc
2 - earnest/sincere words about the President and his awesom responsbilities
3 - intercession on behalf of Obama, as prophets of old interceded for pagan kings, etc
4 - gratitude toward God for being Sovereign of the universe, raising up kings as a "cup of gold" and a "servant" (even though unbelievers)

For all the flaws of the new President, his present thinking on issues very "wrong" in relationship to the Word of God, we ALL must pray for God to use him as He did Cyrus of Persia and Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. I just completed 24 Sunday messages from Jeremiah and am reminded again how God used even these pagan leaders to do HIS work.

I am praying daily for true repentance and faith to illumine Presdient Obama's heart. What a model of God's amazing grace he will be when God does a supernatural work in our new President. (BTW, I still pray for Bill & Hillary in the same vein. God is not through with them yet)

What would YOU suggest to brother Warren to include in his prayer?

    Thanks.

    Good thoughts.

I also pray for president-elect Obama. I pray for his personal safety, his salvation, and his seeking God's face. I also pray this for his family.

What would I pray at the Inauguration?

Well, it wouldn't be a popular prayer, nor would it score me any brownie points - with anyone. I would HAVE to start the prayer with a begging of forgiveness for our beloved nation's collective sins.

In part, I would pray the prayer of Daniel in Dan. 9:1-19, with an emphasis on verse 19.

I would also sincerely thank God for my country and ask him to bless and protect the new president and his family and to use him mightily.

Other than that....I would have to think about it.

In addition to all of the above that Dr. Bob has so wisely indicated, I'd add the same words that I've prayed for my 42+ years in a Father-son relationship.

    They're Biblical too:

"Even so, come, Lord Jesus." -- Revelation 22:20b

My prayer would include asking God that the President and other leaders recognize that they are leading by the grace and will of God, because his will is supreme, and that they would seek His will and wisdom in their decisions and plans. I would also pray "in the name of the glorious Savior, Jesus Christ."

Well, I am living in the place to be for this event. People are renting out their apts., homes, condos, and rooms for incredible fees. I'll just watch on TV. I think the traffic will be a nightmare.

I pray that God continues to have mercy on this nation, and yes, to even bless it despite our greed and selfishness. I also pray that President Obama is used by God to take this country back to a place where God gets the honor, worship, and thankfulness He deserves.

I think it is a good thing to pray for your President. It would sure beat all the name calling. We foreigners are getting a bad impression. I will let God judge whether the man is twice born or not.

We have a twice born Prime Minister, but he is only one voice in government. Our parliament oly counts one vote from each sitting member.

    Cheers, and bless,

    Jim

Always the voice of reason and compassion.

I would pray that our new president never be afraid to lead; yet never be reticent to seek counsel.
That he would not forget the mandate for change that brought him to this historic juncture.
That he would be safe from harm, and that he brings our brave service personnel home from Iraq.

Thought of two totally pagan kings that God used in mighty ways.

Ezra records: In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, the LORD moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and to put it in writing:

"This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: "'The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. Anyone of his people among you--may his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem in Judah and build the temple of the LORD, the God of Israel, the God who is in Jerusalem. And the people of any place where survivors may now be living are to provide him with silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with freewill offerings for the temple of God in Jerusalem.'"

Then the family heads of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and Levites--everyone whose heart God had moved--prepared to go up and build the house of the LORD in Jerusalem. All their neighbors assisted them with articles of silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with valuable gifts, in addition to all the freewill offerings.

And Daniel, 50 years earlier recorded: As the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, he said, "Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?"

The words were still on his lips when a voice came from heaven, "This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you. You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like cattle. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes."

Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from people and ate grass like cattle. His body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird.

"At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever. His dominion is an eternal dominion; his kingdom endures from generation to generation. All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: 'What have you done?'

At the same time that my sanity was restored, my honor and splendor were returned to me for the glory of my kingdom. My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne and became even greater than before.

Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.

That's right Doc, the Lord can and will use ungodly people to accomplish His Godly Will. I don't know what's truly in Obama's heart. He confesses to being a Christian but was not under sound teaching. However, either way, God can use him and in my view he was the best choice on the ballot.

Not so. But, if Obama is a just man, you shouldn't take any issue with my prayer. Justice upon him would mean establishing his administration and giving him victory over his enemies and critics.

That you think it might mean otherwise reveals some doubt in your heart about his character and his goals for this nation.

The Bible does not suggest, but commands, for us to pray for our leaders. I did not vote for Obama, Kerry, Gore, Clinton, Carter, or McGovern. That is not the point. Obama is the duly elected President, he won fair and square. He being the President deserves every Christian prayer in this nation, and from the mess we are in of our own making, it is my prayer God's hand is on him and that he is successful, which he will not be without God.

What do you think it is going to gain our country if he fails? President Biden?

And what makes you think Biden (former plagerizer, dropped out of 1988 election) is any more honest or loves this country any more?

Anyway, I guess the question was what would I pray on Jan 20 [if I were asked to pray at the inauguration.] If I were asked, I wouldn't accept. It would be no honor to be asked by such a man as Obama to invoke God's name to initiate his administration. I'm not surprised that Warren was asked. It should be an eye-opener for the rest of you.

I would pray that God have mercy on our nation, that he would turn the USA back to the God of our fathers, and that we worship and fear God instead of political powers.

Why do you ignore the command to pray for our leaders? I will bet that I have been voting longer than you and for more conservatives.
