Walter Brueggemann - Again...you've never heard of him? United Church of Christ and a professor at Columbia here in Atlanta. I think he may have done the Beecher lectures, but regardless he's one of the most respected OT scholars out there. He wrote Finally Comes the Poet.

David Buttrick (accidentally put his Dad George earlier) - Professor at Vanderbilt Divinity School. I think he's a baptist, but I'm not sure.

    Josh,

Beuchner was American Baptist but now is sort of UCC. Bruggeman is actually Presbyterian, but he is often quoted as UCC and I cannot figure out why. David Buttrick is in fact Baptist and taught at one time at Southern even though his dad was a great Presbyterian.

    Anyway here is my list.

    1)Fred Craddock
    2)Gardner C. Taylor
    3)Jerusha Matsen Neal LOCAL
    4)James Forbes
    5)Cleo LaRue
    6)Tom Long
    7)Barbara Brown-Taylor
    8)Calvin Butts
    9)Pam Driesel Anderson "Lefty's Daughter"
    10)George Mason "The Chesire Preacher"
    11)Joel Gregory
    12)Tony Campolo

    just thoughts,

    Scottie,

Actually, Brueggemann only teaches at a Presbyterian seminary. He is definitely a UCC minister, and I know this for certain because he spoke at length about his faith journey in a UCC polity course that I took. His father was a clergyman in the German Reformed church, which is one of the four traditions that came together in the UCC.

I agree with several of the names on your list, and Tom Long almost made mine as well. I had forgotten all about Lefty's Daughter. Thanks for the reminder.

Baptist is big umbrella and the more I visit with you all on the theological "left", the more I realize that!

My education was at a secular university and at ifb college/seminaries. Obviously, they emphasized J. Hudson Taylor over Barbara Brown Taylor!

I looked up each name in the Dictionary of the Christian Church and in Who's Who in Church History and Harry Emerson Fosdick was the only one from your list in either.

I didn't feel quite so "out-of-the-loop" after reading that!

Thanks for the info. Will do some searching. Understand Word in Waco has tapes of many of these and will try to listen to some "great" preaching from your perspective!

I'll look forward to hearing what you think. I wouldn't expect any but Fosdick (the only one who is not contemporary) to be listed in either of those anthologies. On the other hand, I do think the Beecher lectureships are good indicators of their significance in contemporary homiletics.

Again, Dock and Christi are just personal, local favorites. If you listen to some of the others and then look at one of my sermons I think you'll see the obvious influence they have had on me.

CJosh, Since you've mentioned Fosdick, I wonder what you think of John Roach Stratton who debated him on some of the same issues of this Board? (for those who don't know, he pastored the Calvary Baptist Church in Manhattan, still going strong today, and currently pastored by Kathy Lee Gifford's brother! ) I forget his name, but I've enjoyed listening to him on WMCA radio.
BTW, JoshuaV, I think I know your opinion of J.R.S. ;)
Does anyone know where their debates are published online? Thanks!

    I enjoyed this thread tremendously.

Here are my favorites (not in any order):

    1. Dr. Thomas Cassidy (heard him this summer)
    2. James Merritt (SBC president [no I'm not SBC])
    3. Dr. Shelton Smith (Sword of the Lord editor, heard him preach a few times)
    4. John R. Rice (Sword founder, tapes)
    5. Dr. R. B. Ouellette (Pastor, First Baptist Church, Bridgeport, Michigan)
    6. Warren Wiersbe
    7. Ravi Zacharias (intellectual appeal)

    With the Lord now:
    8. Charles Haddon Spurgeon
    9. Aiden Wilson Tozer (I have a few tapes)

    Watch on SkyAngel:
    10. Adrian Rogers, Tony Evans, David Jeremiah, Jerry Falwell, John Hagee

    Kevin,

Sorry I missed your post. It's safe to say Fosdick and I are on the same side of the fence.

    Webmaster,
Interesting list. I've never heard Dr. Cassidy. Does he know he made #1 on your list :D
You've listed some other good ones, although I have to admit that I think listening to Sheldon Smith, Jerry Falwell, and John Hagee is a fate worse than death
On the flip side, I'd crawl over broken glass to hear Dr. Merritt, Wiersbe, or read Tozer and Spurgeon.

Wow, Doc Cassidy was indeed #1 on my list (although the list was not in any order) [IMG]
I heard him only once, but he is a dynamic preacher with a solid message.

As for the others on the list, I like each of them for different reasons (i.e. Falwell for his "political gospel" :D ) but if I had to choose my absolute favorite, it would be either Merritt or R. B. Oullette.

There are also many others I watch on FamilyNet that I like: Ed Young, Frank Pollard, John Criswell, Robert Jeffress, Dr. Ronnie Floyd, etc.

You've mentioned some more good ones, webmaster. I wish our local cable company had FamilyNet. I can't convince my wife of the necessity of a dish or SkyAngel.

    Tom Vols,

You can listen to AW tozer on this web site www.wgbd.org/tozer.html and Merrit on www.touchinglives.org and he has a couple sermons on the southern seminary webpage www.sbts.edu they also have the last couple years chapel speakers on their as well. Billy Kim "the Revival We Need" is a very good one from the spring 2001. Does anyone know of any sites that has Weirsbe on it? (I dont know if i'd crawl over broken glass, but he is very good) [IMG]

    DFD2,
Southern Seminary has the best of the best at their chapel services. Makes me wish I was a student there again :D

Dr. Merritt's church is within site of my house, but I've never been to visit. I didn't realize that he was so popular outside of Georgia. He's certainly popular around here.

Few would probably recognize some of the names on my list. Most of my "favorites" aren't the big name, well known variety. I've heard some fantastic preaching, Biblically sound and spiritually inspired, from some good local guys (and gals) who are clearly called and gifted to preach.

Not in any particular order, just as they come to mind.

    1. My own pastor, Dr. Roebuck
    2. Joe Stacker, (church a few blocks down the road, Belmont Heights)
    3. Dr. Bill Sherman, former pastor
    4. Nancy Hastings Sehested, formerly in Memphis, now in N.C. (yes, Baptist)
    5. Dr. Bill Leonard, dean of Wake Forest Divinity School
    6. Dr. Daniel Vestal, exec of CBF with a very obvious Texas accent that adds to the message.
    7. Dr. Robert Marsh, a former pastor who now lives in Atlanta??
    8. Dr. Roy Honeycutt, retired prof. of theology at Southern Baptist Theo Seminary in Louisville.
    9. Dr. Joel Gregory
    10. Billy Graham (I said not in any particular order)

For those of you in the moderate to left section of Baptist life, may I ask a question: Would you have cited Joel Gregory 10-15 years ago as a favorite, when he was claimed to hold to a staunch inerrancy position? Just curious. I just have to wonder if he has not curried some favor with the "left" since he has come out swinging against the conservatives.
I ask because I see some similarities between this and the Clark Pinnock situation years ago. He was a favorite of many conservatives while he championed inerrancy. Since he claims to have jettisoned that belief, he is now squarely in the left and is mentioned in the same sentence with the likes of Crawford Toy as a conservative gone astray in Baptist life.

I've never heard or read Joel Gregory. As for Dr. Pinnock, I usually refer to him as one who "found the light." ;)
