Can Christians have the devil as their Father? Or does that mean they were unsaved? And if they were unsaved how can that be since this was written to Christians?

John is part of our Christian Bible, but Jesus wasn't speaking to Christians, as none existed yet. He was speaking to Jews.

Verse 30 said that many of the Jews standing around listening to all of this believed Him. Then verse 31 says that Jesus began to speak about spiritual freedom to those who did believe Him.

Verse 32 begins a venomous tone from some of these Jews. It can't be the ones who just believed on Jesus. The word, "They", in verse 32 must be talking about the ones standing around who did not believe Him. They are still a part of the conversation. Not everyone in the discussion believed.

It's almost as if the ones listening who did not believe are angry at the ones who did believe and they are starting to grasp at straws in trying their best to discredit Jesus and when they cannot do that, they try to stone Him.

What transpires next is impossible for someone who believes Jesus.

    • The first thing they did was to lie. They said that didn't need Jesus' "freedom" because they were Jews and had never been in bondage to anyone. Well, that was not only a lie, but stupid lie.
    • Then they tried to claim their being descendants of Abraham as a sufficient pedigree. "Abraham is our father."
    • Next, when Jesus explains that a racial pedigree is not enough, they accuse Jesus' mother of committing fornication and Jesus being conceived immorally and they made claims that God was their Father on a moral stance.
    • After Jesus trashes their foolishness, then they grasp at a new straw. They claim He is a demon.
    • Lastly, they try to twist His words around about Abraham and accuse Him of irrational behavior and try to stone Him.
Those actions are impossible for a saved person to commit.

    John 1:
9: That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10: He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11: He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12: But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

That meant those who did not receive Him were the sons of someone else. (The Devil)

    1. The assumption behind this question is mind-blowing to me:

    a. God has fathered everyone who has ever been born or been conceived (Ps. 139:13-14, let's not forget that awesome truth of life within a mother's womb).

    b. But in another sense, God has not fathered some (John 8:42-44).

    2. What an amazing, earth-moving reality! I am humbled by the thought of it. Lord, have mercy on all of us.

Apparently he wasn't talking in the sense you are TC; for none were sons of God, until Jesus gave some the power to become the sons of God.

    1. Please reread my quote, maybe you will get what I am truly saying.

    2. The birth of a child, physically, is a gift of God (Ps 127). The parents of that baby girl were only vessels that our heaven Father used.

    3. Speaking on behalf of all of us, the psalmist sings, "For you formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother's womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well" (139:13, 14, NASB).

    a. God formed me, TC, in my mother's womb.

    b. That's what I am talking about physically.

    4. But spiritually, well, that is the context of John 8. It is really that simple.

I agree totally TC and understood you the first time. I was just saying what you said in #4 that John 8 was talking about spiritually. Sorry if you thought I disagreed with you, just putting it into context that I could understand.

I think it is a beautiful thought also. You and I have agreed on most things, I hope the little incident concerning the languages doesn't come between us.

    1. I understand that BB provides a platform where we can agree to disagree as believers in the Lord.

    2. The language discussion should not come between us. I respect your views and hope you render the same to me. My training has programmed me to think language in understanding a biblical text.

    3. We all should be allowed to be opinionated at times.

And my opinion is that my opinion is always right.... to me... unless I am wrong... then my opinion is still right...

So is it at all possible that not everyone Jesus spoke to was regenerated even though this book was written to Christians?
