Would you attend a church that only uses certain hymns?

Our church typically only uses older hymns although there are a few that have passed the screening and been allowed in. As with many things that are a part of our modern worldly culture, one of the biggest reasons we stay away from modern hymns is the fact that we try to use discernment in regards to what we believe the Bible teaches in reference to separation. Most wouldn't agree, but that is fine. We are an extremely old fashioned church with old values and expectations, but our doors are open to all. Just like I wouldn't be comfy in a hiphop or RW church, many wouldn't feel comfy in our church.

We stick to the old hymns because we are an old church, which believes the old book, and is following the old doctrines. This is in fact an answer to prayer for many of us who came out of the "new" churches wtih all the glitter and glam of a country club.

Plus, we all think the new music is barf... (even though the song leader, sundays school teacher, and pastor are all former "christian rockers, punks, praise and worship leaders" etc.). But, I said THINK, that is our opinion and it makes for sweet fellowship.

 

Yes and no. Personally, I like and am more familiar with traditional hymns, but I'm also open to hearing new songs. Not a big fan of country/western, though, and a lot of churches around here play it.

This is an excellent point.
It is important to note that the age of a song is not what makes it good or bad. I think many tend to think that any song written before 1900 is good and anything written after 1970 is bad.

Of course neither is true.

What hymns are you talking about? Musical hymns or non musical hymns? We sing hymns with out music in are church. We line sing. I don't down music I just don't like the way some people use it. I seen alot of my family sing with guitars and get drunk playing gospel music and go to church on sundays after. I trie to keep away from churches that have guitars. Just what I believe no disrespact. I can go to a bar to see someone playing a guitar or go to see my family. I go to church to serve God. I hope I did not get anyone upset this is just what I believe in.

 

Just curious, we have a missionary we support in S.Korea through them.

I think what you are saying is that you realize that there is no prohibition in scripture against guitars in church, but do to your personal experience it bothers you. is that correct?

It don't bother me till I get around it. I trie to stay away from it so it won't bother me. I don't thank all people who play guitar do them things. What I am trieing to say is that I have seen alot of people play guitar to be seen of man and not God. My daddy plays guitar and all of my uncles and they get drunk and sing Christain music and curse his name and other things they do but I do not want to get into that. But what really gets to me is they go to church after this and they sing to God infront of everyone. No guilt from the other night or nothing. I my self stay away from stuff like that. They want me to sing with them to. I ask how can you sing drunk to the lord. They say it is just a good time. I thank this is a evil thing that they are doing. I guess people like that say eat, drink and be merry for tomarrow we die. But for me I will serve him in spirit and in truth. No I don't drink.

 

As much as I like contemporary, P&W, etc... I love the hymns as well...

So Yes... I could....as long as they were the old classical hymns.

I can worship God in any setting.. because the setting is not what I am focused on... I am focused on God!

If I attended a church that only used traditional hymns from the 19th century or earlier and it was a source of frustration, contention or distraction for me then I AM A BIGGER FOOL than what I might think those who have decided on this format are!

 

I personally know of four organists who have engaged in immoral behavior (personally they have never been in a church I was with). Thus, one should shy away from listening to an organ.

I'd keep away from them, period. Look, listen, or whatever, and eventually you're gonna touch one. And once you start touching other people's organs, there'll be no stopping until you've ruined your ministry, family, church, and life.
