That's okay Dr. Bob! If memory serves correctly I, uh, kinda sorta did it to you once and didn't have the guts to admit it. I was trying to edit spelling in it. Before anyone noticed I was going to tell you, but then somebody brought up posts mysteriously disappearing and blamed gremlins or something, and it sounded so nice to me and so much better that I just agreed that it was, indeed, quite interesting. I was skeered to admit it because you were so tall and I was intimidated. (does that excuse work online?)

So just consider your post inside of my deleted one your free post from me. I owed it to you for what, I think it was 4-6 years ago when I had special powers here?

Legalistic friends have a way of rubbing off on your children!

One yr we attended an ultra legalistic church in your area, the kind that taught that going trick or treating was a sin, and it was serving Satan..
Justin was only about 6 or 7.. so for the first time in his life we didn't let him go.

The next yr, common sense set in, and we left the IFB movement that was gripping that area into ultra KJVOism, and Legalism to the point that in one church was almost becoming a cult while they were serving lord Matt! instead of Jesus...*cough* *cough*...

Anyways...
That next yr when we told Justin he could go back to his grandparents and aunts/uncles houses and trick or treat.. He responded with...

"You mean daddy, we are going to serve Satan this yr!"

That told me that the stinkin legalists had influenced him through me!.. And I was just as guilty for allowing those cult members to teach my children.

***Disclaimer... NOT every IFB church is cult like... there are some I would be proud to be a part of... ABC's church for instance... I would go there in a heartbeat if God wanted me in that area... BUT!... Since I am from ABC's area.. I can say without a doubt there are a couple IFB churches that Spamderson would have been a part of back in the 90s.. .I was there...I was fooled!***

 

Our farm is bordered on two sides by water (the Chesapeake Bay on one side and a wonderful creek on the other) so we have both a beach and a great swimming hole. As a result, we pretty much always have our kids' friends and others over to swim.

Unless it's something just really immodest, we'll usually just let them be. Most of the kids are our children's friends from our church, so they've been instructed on modest dress. But every now and then, we'll have some who really dress pretty skimpy and my wife will pull them aside and talk to them.

 

What horrible advice. Without even knowing these people and after reading just a few sentences about them you conclude and advise to definitely rid them as friends.

You could be correct and they might not be the best choice of friends, but you could just as easily be wrong and they might be wonderful friends.

IMHO, and if it was my daughter I would want be absolutely certain that a friend of hers would be harmful to her before I would force her to give up the friendship. And as far as any of us reading this thread the only information we know about this girl is she is from a Christian family and her father requires she covers up when swimming. Not really enough information.

 

You are right... I was wrong.
I jumped the gun, and was reacting to my past experiences with people and churches who live in the area ABC lives now.

So, ABC... you can ignore what I said.. and use your best judgment.. After all, you are a pretty good judge of character... you chose a great husband in pocadots!

JUST be careful!... Because legalism will trap your children into something that may damage them in the future.

It is totally your choice. They are not imposing on your children because you can choose not to send them. I would accede to the parent's wishes or not let my kids go.

 

The bolded motivation may or may not be correct.There are certainly more reasonable motivations. It certainly is not a given. When it comes to modesty I would. Just because everyone else at the pool is not as modest does not give a reason for us not to be. That logic could be used to the point that we go no where in this world for a great many things.

 

I was wondering the same. And I don't mean that against public pools, but his flexible standards.

 

Even if they were, if it affects you then you still have a problem.
