    CONCORD, NH: A senior official in US President George W Bush’s re-election campaign was sentenced to 10 months in prison on Wednesday for his role in suppressing votes in a key US Senate race, a scandal that Democrats charge may involve the White House.

    James Tobin, 45, one of three Republican campaign operatives convicted in a phone-jamming scheme designed to keep New Hampshire Democrats from voting in a 2002 election, was convicted in December of two telephone harassment charges...

    Democrats want an investigation into 22 telephone calls made by Tobin and New Hampshire Republican Party officials to the White House on November 5 and 6, 2002, and say they believe national Republican officials may be involved in the scheme.

    Both major parties try to disrupt each other's voters, including crossing over into each other's primaries, as well as raising the ballot access bar extremely high to keep other parties from being represented on state ballots.

    Now it comes out that the RNC paid for this guy's defense.

    Imagine that.

    Raiding primiaries is bad enough. When it spills over to criminal activity, we need to step on it.

    Galatian, do you mean stuff like this?

    Federal agents searched the Capitol Hill office of a Louisiana congressman under investigation on bribery charges Sunday, while newly released court papers said agents found $90,000 in cash last year in his Washington home.

    In a 95-page affidavit used to obtain a warrant for the office search, investigators stated that an August 2005 search of Democratic Rep. William Jefferson's home turned up the cash sum in a freezer.

    and I bet most of ya'all didn't hear about what happened here in MIlwaukee during the last general election for president. During the night before the election we had some people slash the tires of the vans that were going to be used by the RNC to help people get to the polls. Turns out two of them were the "kis" of major Democratic officials in our city....one had just gotten elected to Congress (Gwen More), and the other is our mayor.
    Remember when I say "kids" I mean 30 year olds.

    We didn't hear much about it from the national press though.

    Helen, I do indeed mean both. We need to be particularly severe with public servants who attempt to subvert elections (an the Republicans did in this case) or take bribes (as democrat Jefferson is accused of doing in the other).

    Do you think the Democratic national committee will spend millions to defend Jefferson as the Republican National Committee spent millions to defend Tobin?

    My guess is that Jefferson wasn't doing it on their orders, and so won't get any legal help from them.

    But we'll wait and see.

    And it's also true that election-rigging tends to be the behavior of the party in power, so it's to a degree understandable that the republicans have had more embarassments than the democrats lately.

    A generation ago, it was different, particular in some southern states. The democrats were notorious for that kind of thing.
