Youth Choir Music (Non-Contemporary)

Oy. What's the skill level? What grades (middle and hgh school, just high school, etc)? Do you push them beyond what they think they can do? Do you incorporate more than four parts? Are you willing to do so? I know you said "non-contemporary," but does that exclude old time gospel? Are you willing to have them sing in (and take the time to learn) Latin or German? I know that many pieces offer a translation, but I personally don't think they translate as well, both in terms of lyrics and the artistic integrity of the piece.

I have a lot of possibilities, but many of them are in Latin. And I'd need a better idea of what "non-contemporary means" in terms of what era you're trying to avoid (anything in the 21st century? 20th?) in order to be able to help you in any constructive way.

Some things I like that sound good with young voices:

Steal Away (this is really lovely)
There Is a Balm in Gilead
Bound for Canaan's Land (this one if the voices are a little more mature)
The Lord Bless You and Keep You (nice, particaulrly if you do the sevenfold amen at the end)

I'll have to dig through some of my books when I get home tonight.


And I know you said no to other languages, but Mozart's Missa Brevis is really nice. And there are some Kyrie Eleisons and Magnificats that I like.

Tell me in theirs one you don't know, adn If I have them in my hymn books here, I can. I'm not sure how much online time I will have this week, because my grandpa is in ICU. WE've had phone calls all day, so I can't be on for long periods of time. But if theres anything I can send tell me, and I'll do my best to get it to you.

I'd say "Holy Pure and Righteous" but I don't think that's been published... our Church got it from the guys who wrote it...

 

Christ follower, I don't have the sheet music to "The Midnight Cry", but I can give you the words. "My LIfe Has Been Changed", I'll have to check with a friend on that one, so it may be awhile till I can get it to you. I'm going to start scanning the others now. I hope I can get some to you tonight, if not, tomorrow.

hmmmmmmmm I don't even think we have the sheet music any more... our piano player rarely reads music... he does it all by ear!

 

How about "Revive Us Again" "Onward Christina Soldiers", "Precious Memories" and "When The Storm Passes By"?

Why not ask the kids what they might like to sing?
You never know, they might just surprise you.
