The amount awarded by the court may or may not be out of line, since there is no real appraisal of all the pieces involved.

By what little description of the jewelry is given, I suspect the amount awarded was high.

Since we don't have the actual value, we should err on the side of generosity. Maybe these law-enforcement people will be more careful in the future.

Just more proof that there are thieves working for the police. There should be an investigation into what happened to the jewelry. If the thief is found (even if it's a police officer) he should be arrested and charged with a crime. It must have been worth enough to make stealing it worth the risk.
