US President Barack Obama has announced plans for securing American computer networks against cyber attacks.

He said that from now on, America's digital infrastructure would be treated as a strategic national asset.

He announced the creation of a cyber security office in the White House, and said he would personally appoint a "cyber tsar".

    Oh goodie...

    Another czar...

We have more czars than the old Russian Empire !!!

    Czar - an autocratic ruler.

Yup. That's where our government is headed - might as well get the titles right.

Matt! Is that you Matt? I thought you were still away studying up on the subject so's the next time we met you'd actually have a workable rebuttal instead of this kind of hit and try to run tactic, Matt.

93% of American money exists ONLY in cyber-space. How far do you really think this country can go if all of a sudden there is only 7% of American money left? Not far - straight into a depression.

In the early 1980s I studied for a free-form Master's, studying what people said about the future. This day was predicted when over 90% of all money would exist only in cyber-space.

Remember when Fort Knox had gold in it to back currency (it is in the history books)? now our 2% of US money is backed in cyber-space. Take cyber-space serious.

BTW, last month i went and helped a auto-finance company make a new $22,000 US money that never existed before.

All hail the (new global) fiat money system then! Personally I can't see what's wrong with a constitutional money system other than the bankers have a hard time inflating and deflating real money. But sure you're right Ed...we must protect what's been killing us for a hundred years, I suspose if for no other reason than because it's been around controlling and killing us for hundred years.

    Makes perfect sense to me.

Unfortunately Brother Poncho, your well expressed opinion is the very attitude that will blow the socks off this Country and put us in the throes of anarchy. Only the Antichrist will get us out of the war between states (each state versus all other states), war between the ethneos (Greek from which we get 'ethnic' but which is translated 'nations' in the MOD [Mount Olivet Discourse]), war between the neighborhoods, and war against the neighbors. Yes, I predict all gatherings of over ten people will soon be outlawed (well, a couple of football teams can get together and play for TV but instead of 80,000 people here, there will be less than 100). Yes, I predict war in the streets (and all my neighbors are gun toting folk who will be shooting at each other - I intend to shoot back). Three cheers for Anarchy! [isn't it strange how close the spelling of 'anarchy' and 'antichrist' are ;-) ]

    All we are saying:
    Give Obama a Chance.

I fail to see why some folks are so afraid of returning to a constititonal republic Ed. So far all the oligarchs who've been in charge of our national wealth since 1913 have done is turn our labor into their profits at our expense plus compounded interest. Our founders found the idea of a central bank and a fiat money system so revolting that they actually revolted! They must have been stupid to risk anarchy like that as everyone today knows it's much better (safer, comfortable) to be controlled by a handfull of un democratic despots in a boardroom somewhere than to risk being a free and independent nation once again.

Sound money, who needs it? We do...now more than ever.

Edited to get back on topic.

During a speech today on “cybersecurity,” Obama told a whopper. He said the government’s effort to protect us from cyber bad guys “will not include monitoring private sector networks or Internet traffic. We will preserve and protect the personal privacy and civil liberties that we cherish as Americans.”

Is it possible Obama has never heard of Mark Klein, the retired AT&T communications technician who said years ago that the company shunted all Internet traffic — including traffic from peering links connecting to other Internet backbone providers — to semantic traffic analyzers, installed in a secret room inside the AT&T central office on Folsom Street in San Francisco? There are similar rooms in Seattle, San Jose, Los Angeles and San Diego, all sucking up internet data.

Klein explained that the multinational corporation is doing this at the behest of the NSA. It is “vacuum-cleaner surveillance” approach that grabs everything. “Despite what we are hearing, and considering the public track record of [the Bush] administration, I simply do not believe their claims that the NSA’s spying program is really limited to foreign communications or is otherwise consistent with the NSA’s charter or with FISA [the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act],” said Klein in 2006.

Guys there is a lot more at stake here than the money.

What do you suppose would happen if a hacker were to shut down the computers at one of our nucluear facilities? Think it can't happen, think again.

How about your private medical information? Do you really think it is secure sitting up there at in a big university hospital? LOL Let me just tell you, if you are in a research study have you asked how they are handling your info or as is most likely the case, could they be filing away your info onto a laptop, cause researchers are busy important people <sarcasm> who often take their "work" (ie your info) home with them on computers that don't even have a password set up on them.

Oh, and how do you that your ex-wife's cousin who works up at the hospital where you have your blood work done for your regular yearly work physical, isn't peaking into your records to see if there is anything in them that can be used against you in your upcoming custody hearing?

What if your employer wanted to know if the cancer you just tested positive for was incurable or merely if it were going to cost next year's insurance rates to go up (thus giving him the motivation to hunt for a reason to fire you)? Could he bribe the tech person at your docs office to let him "take a quick peek" at your records? Are there measures in place to prevent that, or at the very least find when the intrusion occured? Or could he simply pay some thug to go steal your docs unsecured, unencripted laptop out of his car while he is in picking his kid up from school?

These are things that happen evey single day.

This isn't all about monitering internet traffic and whether such is an invasion of privacy. What it needs to be about is how to secure such traffic from univited guests. If you want policy to be kept on track, then pay attention to what is happening and yell at your legislature if you don't like it.

We tried yelling at them already. 90 percent of us told them not to bail the banks out. What did they do anyway?
