Once again, South Carolina is the punch line for every late night comedian with a monologue.

Thanks to Rep. If 3rd District Rep. Joe Wilson intended to damage President Barack Obma’s health care reform plan by shouting at the president Wednesday night, his plan backfired.

The South Carolina Republican shouted “You lie!” after Obama told a joint session of Congress that extending health care to all Americans who seek it would not mean insuring illegal immigrants.

Although Wilson swiftly apologized — and Obama has since accepted — his actions were condemned by both Democrats and Republicans.

His outburst was reminiscent of the orchestrated displays during recent congressional town hall meetings by opponents of Obama’s health care plan.

It may also wind up costing him, politically.

Wilson’s opponent, Rob Miller, has received donations totalling $700,000 since his remark, according to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

South Carolina republican congressman Joe Wilson’s outburst during President Obama’s nationally televised speech was more about decorum than it was about ‘who’s right and who’s wrong. He was in the right place at the wrong time. We expect our elected officials to have some measure of civility and to exercise said civility at the appropriate time. However, politicians and citizens should be able to challenge and question the President.

Rep. Joe Wilson is wrong.

In his speech to Congress Wednesday, President Barack Obama said the changes to health care that he's proposing "would not apply to those who are here illegally." That prompted Wilson, a South Carolina Republican, to shout "You lie!" from his seat in the House chamber. Wilson later apologized for the outburst but didn't back down from his claim.

Despite heated opposition to Obama’s health-care proposal from the conservative majority in the state, most of Wilson’s political allies and Upstate residents questioned on the subject Thursday said they disapproved of the Republican representative’s eruption when Obama said his plan wouldn’t provide benefits to illegal aliens.

“The President deserves respect, especially when speaking to a joint session of the Congress,” said Republican Rep. Bob Inglis of Greenville. “Our opposing views should be presented decently and in order, not as interruptions.”

Once again a South Carolina politician has embarrassed the public he pledged to serve. Congressman Joe Wilson, a Republican who represents South Carolina’s second district (Cayce, Hilton Head Island and St. Andrews) apologized for shouting “You lie” during President Obama’s speech Wednesday night to Congress. His disrespectful behavior reminded us more of a pre-teen responding to a double-dog-dare than responsible representation of his district or his state.
