................The Census Bureau report cited by Orszag does not contain any data about why people don’t have health insurance. It does not distinguish between people who cannot get health insurance and people who freely decide not to get it. The only question it asks is whether or not a person had health insurance during the previous year.

If someone had coverage for part or all of the year, the Census Bureau counted them as “insured”--if they didn’t, they were counted as “uninsured.”

The Census Bureau also says that insurance coverage is often underreported, with people more likely to answer “no” if they are currently without coverage even if they were covered for part of the previous year--meaning they should have answered “yes.”

“[H]ealth insurance coverage is underreported in the CPS ASEC for a variety of reasons,” the Census Bureau noted. “For example, some people may report their insurance coverage status at the time of their interview rather than their coverage status during the previous calendar year.”

In fact, a spokesperson in the Census Bureau’s health insurance division told CNSNews.com that there is nothing in the health insurance report that has anything to do with why people are uninsured.

“There isn’t. The survey that that report is based on, the Current Population Survey, doesn’t ask any questions about why [people lack coverage]. We really don’t ask any questions about why.”

It would be a tough job.

I could never get elected. I really believe people don't want to hear the truth.

IF I did manage to get elected , a democrat congress would have to censure me almost daily, probably for "incivility".

But I believe civility begins with the truth. Liars should not be tolerated. Instead of censuring the one that proves another is lying and says so, they should censure the liar.

That'll never happen. Not with democrats in the majority.

thanks for the vote of confidence, anyway.

It appears that none of the respondents so far have read the article cited ...............the title is misleading. The Census Bureau actually not only supports the President, but actually shows that there are more uninsured than he cited.

    Bold emphasis mine.

Obama claimed that 30 million Americans cannot get health insurance.

The census provides absolutely no support for that claim.

The census does not adress at all whether the uninsured can or cannot get health insurance.

    Your post was most uncivil.

If 46 million are uninsured it is reasonable to believe that 30 million cannot afford insurance ... i.e. cannot get insurance.

No, actually it is not a reasonable assumption.

But you stick with that rather than admitting your mistake.

    Lie # 1 - 46 million uninsured

Lie #2- 30 million cannot afford it.

The first lie naturally leads to the second.

My question is: how many uninsured do not wish to have insurance.

    Salty

ps just wondering, I have no health insurance as I am a service connected vet - so all my care is at the VA. So how am I counted.
and then how about Vets who are not service connected, but receive all care at VA for free as their income is to low?

    Only the mentally ill ones.

You have insurance, the VA. If you are against government run health care why not reject it and obtain private health care?

Another well thought out analysis on your part.

Actually a number of young and healthy working people simply choose not to buy insurance because they do not see the need for it.

This is part of Obama's plan - MAKE these people buy insurance against their will so that the money can be used to subsidize others.

His question is how would he have been counted in the census - as someone with or without insurance?

Honest answer - you don't know.

Census breakdown says somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 million people can afford insurance, are healthy enough to obtain it, but simply don't want to pay for it.

There are actually about 8-10 million people that want insurance, but can't afford it or qualify for it. And many of them are covered by medicaid.

The democrat solution to that small problem is to destroy the insurance industry, put hundreds of thousands of people out of work, and force over 200 million people into a program they don't want.

It's about control, not the uninsured.
