I doubt the Olympic Committee is nuts.

It would be like pouring money down a sewer line.

I LOVE Chicago! I hope they get it! :) I would so be going to some events and my wife would love to go to the opening or closing programs. Illinois can foot the bill for a new Bird's Nest though. I don't want any part of it. ;)

I wonder if the community organizer would have made a similar pitch for Dallas/Fort Worth or Raleigh/Durham?????

What does that matter ? Are you O.K. with him blaming Bush for his entire term, while he gets nothing done, and breaks every campaign promise he made ?

I saw on 60Minutes that he has talked with his hand-picked Afghan theater general once, in the 70 days since he has picked him. The zero is back to his Illinois Senate habit of voting "present".

Why do you hate South America ? They are the competition for Chicago, and they have NEVER hosted an Olympics. Why are you so bigoted against them ?

I have also read where Chicago officials don't even want this headache.

Have you kept up with the news out of Chicago?

They're having trouble keeping people alive in that city.

It's too dangerous a place for the Olympics, IMO.

Video shows teens beating Chicago student to death

CHICAGO – Cell phone footage showing a group of teens viciously kicking and striking a 16-year-old honors student with splintered railroad ties has ramped up pressure on Chicago officials to address chronic violence that has led to dozens of deaths of city teens each year.

SNIP

More than 30 students were killed last school year, and the city could exceed that number this year.

The good news: ACORN won't be around to "help".

Actually it will probably be cloned before it's execution.

Then in a year or so it will reappear as some other kind of nut.

I've been keeping a eye on the Olympic bids for a while now. Between the four current bidding locations (Chicago, Tokyo, Rio de Janiero, and Madrid), I think Chicago is the best choice. I'm not sure how I feel about a sitting POTUS stumping for a US location, but I hope that Chicago is awarded the 2016 Games.

I disagree.

Chicago has a HUGE crime problem. Also, they're not too well off finanically.

ANd ever since Barcelona 1992...the Olympics (partuclarly the summer games) have been a financial behemoth...and there's no guarantee of a "return" on all the money spent.

The last thing Chicago needs is to go billions and billions in debt. Heck, they can't even keep their citizens safe...how are they gonna run an Olympics?

Not to mention their municipal leadership would rival any third-world country when it comes to corruption.

It's a disaster in the making.

And this is a first for me: I've never rooted against a US city receiving a bid.

The same could have been said for Los Angeles. In 1984, they had a significant crime problem, and were financially strapped. Yet the 1984 Games of the XXIII Olmpiad in Los Angeles were incredibly successful.

You're incorrect about the Summer Games being a behemoth in regards to losses. It was only the last games in Athens that resulted in a loss.

1984 (Los Angeles) profited $250 million US.
1988 (Seoul) profited $300 million (a record high).
1992 (Barcelona) made profits of US $5 million.
1996 (Atlanta) made profits of US $10 million.
2000 (Sydney) profited $1.8 billion.

Only the 2004 Athens games ended in a loss.

I find it interesting how so many who say they are conservative and patriotic on this board want Rio to win the Olympics. Funny patriotism. I think there is more behind this than is being stated.
