Am I the only one that thinks that the Government may take this too far???
Or is it the WVian in me that hates being told what to do by the feds?

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/200...-distracted-driving-warns-fatal-consequences/

I understand texting.. I even can understand holding a cell phone...

BUT!! Anyone too stupid to be able to hold a conversation with a passenger or listen to music while driving SHOULD IMMEDIATELY RETURN THEIR LICENSE TO THE DMV!!!

But what should we expect from this nanny state that used to be the land of the free...?

When talking to a passenger, you usually turn your head and face the person you are talking to.

There are two problems with talking on the cell phone.
    1. Extended conversations - more than 3 minutes ( esp if it gets emotional*)
    2. When turning, passing a large vehicle, or poor driving conditions.

    * never break up with your girlfriend via cell phone when she is driving on the interstate in a snow blizzard.

I'm all for the cell phone texting tickets and talking on your cell phone without a handsfree piece. (Most of the bad drivers here all have their cell phone glued to their ears and aren't paying attention.)

I'm also a fan of banning applying makeup and eating your breakfast but I'll take a backseat...pun intended...on those. I swear I almost got obliterated by a twentysomething girl applying her makeup while drinking a Starbucks two weeks ago. Literally, two feet different and I would be in the hospital...at best. :)

I can talk and drive with no problem. Shoot, I can talk and do ANYTHING with no problem!:tongue3:

I have almost gotten into several accidents because the other driver was playing with a GPS. To me, those things are more dangerous than cell phones!

This should be an issue of driver's education, not post-licensed legislation. We here in CA got foisted with a law that makes it illegal to talk on a cell phone in a vehicle (unless you're using a handsfree device). It's probably one of the stupidest laws enacted in 2009 in this state (well, except for our last state budget, I suppose).

    Johnv,
In New York the fine is over $100 - how much is it in Calif?
We have had the dumb law for about 5 years now.

ps - police are exempted from the law

$20 on the 1st offense, and $50 on the second. There's already a movement to get an initiative on the ballot, which would reduce it to an infraction instead of a moving violation (which means they couldn't pull you over for it, but could cite you for it if you were ticketed for an unrelated violation).

Obey the law. Driving a car is a privilege that not all get to have.

I said it before and I'll say it again.....In the '70's the C.B. craze did not cause any more accidents than there were before. Maybe people just can't drive now-a-days.

Actually, you could - using the "click" in Morse code

One other thing about the NY law. It is legal to dial a phone number, but not to talk on the phone.

Lets see, you have to take your eyesoff the road to dial, but to talk, you can keep your eyes on the road.
