President Obama didn't wait long after Tuesday's devastating elections to give critics another reason to question his leadership, but this time the subject matter was more grim than a pair of governorships.

After news broke out of the shooting at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas, the nation watched in horror as the toll of dead and injured climbed. The White House was notified immediately and by late afternoon, word went out that the president would speak about the incident prior to a previously scheduled appearance. At about 5 p.m., cable stations went to the president. The situation called for not only his trademark eloquence, but also grace and perspective.

But instead of a somber chief executive offering reassuring words and expressions of sympathy and compassion, viewers saw a wildly disconnected and inappropriately light president making introductory remarks. At the event, a Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Department of Interior's Bureau of Indian affairs, the president thanked various staffers and offered a "shout-out" to "Dr. Joe Medicine Crow -- that Congressional Medal of Honor winner." Three minutes in, the president spoke about the shooting, in measured and appropriate terms. Who is advising him?

I find this degree of callousness a bit over the top, in the sense that Obama isn't (In my mind) really this callous. I think (hope) he simply made an error in judgment, in engaging the Indian thing first. But he has people that are supposed to manage this sort of thing.. And no, I'm not his supporter in any way, so far.

Or to put it another way: If he intentionally did this, he's more despicable that I imagined. He seems somehow disconnected from common human emotional norms.

I don't think that a Christian should be advocating an act of physical violence against the president of the United States, regardess of who the president is.

Rule 5.Capitalize the titles of high-ranking government officials when used with or before their names. Do not capitalize the civil title if it is used instead of the name. Examples:The president will address Congress. All senators are expected to attend. The governors, lieutenant governors, and attorneys general called for a special task force. Governor Fortinbrass, Lieutenant Governor Poppins, Attorney General Dalloway, and Senators James and Twain will attend.

    I agree.

I thought his speech was certainly not his finest hour. But we can disagree without taking the courageous step of wanting someone ELSE to slap him.

Did he mean that someone should literally slap him? I doubt it.

When I was in high school, way last century, we were taught that President was always to be capatalized.

Well, I guess that is up to interpuration.
I did find two links that say you do capatalize President, even without a name - when refering to the POTUS - as there is only one at a time ( other than the Clintons :tongue3:)

    From english.ttu.edu

    From infomatics

Here is a quote from the first link - which merely points out it is common, not required

When I speak of the president I do not capitilise the word unless I am speaking of President Whoever or specifically using the title like the President of Ireland.

There are many presidents around the world, not just one :)

I do think it is uncalled for that anyone would say the president should be slapped.

It is hyperbole - a writer's tool - and not meant to be taken literally.

I suppose when the word president is used within the contex of a country, then a capital letter is justified.

An over reaction. While they ignored the same type of criticism of Bush and worse they work to protect Obama at all costs.

It could be that Obama was just being himself, totally narcissistic.

Maybe so, but why would a Christian use such language?

That's right. It's like saying someone should kick his rear.
