Kudos to McCain for exposing democrat plans to pay for their program by depriving our most senior citizens of needed medical care.

"Democrats argued that the cuts - totaling $464 billion over 10 years - would not affect the basic services guaranteed by Medicare..."

So cutting Medicare by $464,000,000,000,000 won't affect basic services?

"...and instead would squeeze insurance companies and hospitals that are overcharging for the level of service they are providing."

The real result will be yet even doctors choosing not to see Medicare patients.

I suppose the Dems believe that will also not affect basic services.

Thats right, cut medical care for seniors, they aren't worth much anyway are they dems.
Here how much it effects seniors, my mother is losing her medicare coverage at the end of the year. She will have no medical coverage at all unless she can buy insurance on social security.

Far too early to make such pronouncements ... and it depends on who the Republicans run. Remember way back when almost anyone in the country could have defeated Nixon and the Democrats looked real hard and found the only man, McGovern, who could not beat him?

Unless they are replaced by advocates for limited government that will align with someone like Congressman Ron Paul it won't make any substantive difference.

Starting January there will be a 37% reimbusement cut to physicians who perform cardiac stress tests on Medicare patients.

We should start seeing an increase in coronary related deaths shortly thereafter as physicians stop ordering these tests.

Why is she losing her coverage? And are you talking about Medicare Part A or Part B that she will be losing?

It sounded a little fishy to me that conservatives and republicans would be opposed to Medicare cuts and the Democrats trying to be fiscally responsible in their spending.

It looks like a quarter of the cuts (~$100 billion) is to Medicare Advantage programs where private insurance companies act as a proxy for Medicare. Now things are starting to make some sense.

If you look at the report by the Congressional Budget Office, it looks like the Medicare Advantage program partially subsides extra benefits offered by these insurance companies for things that are not normally covered by medicare (ie dental, vision) if companies can offer basic medicare coverage for less than the medicare benchmark.

The bill would eliminate that extra subsidy as well as forcing insurance companies who are able to offer medicare coverage for lower than the benchmark to pass the benefit back to the person being covered in the form of additional coverage or lower cost. So the biggest impact will be on the insurance companies, not the insured.

Another fyi as that this $400 billion figure is savings over the ten year period from 2010 to 2019. So it is more like $40 billion a year and $10 billion for Medicare advantage if you average it out over the period.

Agreed. The government shouldn't be in the business of paying for anyone's medical coverage. The less of my tax dollars that goes to that the better! :)

Would someone please tell us how Republicans winning in 2010 and 2012 will solve anything? That really makes a lot of sense. Replace a super liberal Congress with a liberal Congress. We never learn, do we?

It's much more cost effective to just kill off old people than treat them.

    But it's not rationing.

Apparently not, saturnneptune. Some of us have finally turned our back on the two major parties. We need more people to do so.

I don't know why, she doesn't understand why, or at least can't explain it, and I have not read her papers, shes capable of takeing care of herself,(meaning she desn't want help and so far really doesn't need it, just a little nudge occasionaly) again I don't know which part it is only that she will have no coverage. She's been looking for something she can afford, I think shes settled on humanna, or at least last month she was. I really wish I knew more, but since she is capable I feel it might be pushing too much into her business to keep asking. Not sure what to do.

Oh, it is way beyond that. If we don't, we are not going to make it. In reference to another thread, God's patience with this nation is going to run out, and in my opinion, very quickly. A Republican Congress is not going to do one thing to make God want to have mercy on us.

If democrats were to really be fiscally responsible they would drop their whole healthscare bill.
