As Monday’s ceremony got under way, Parker and her partner, Kathy Hubbard, stood and waved to the crowd, which responded with a standing ovation. Then, Lakewood Church Pastor Joel Osteen offered the invocation.

Nothing to get all worked up about. Osteen is a prominent Houston pastor, and did the invocation for the Houston Mayoral inaguration. I can think of several reasons to be critical of Joel Osteen, but this isn't on the list. If I were pastor of Boo City Church, and was asked to give the invocation at the Boo City Mayoral or Boo City Council inaguration, I'd accept the invitation without regard to the political or personal vices or virtues of the ones taking office.

Are you saying John that you would allow the Holy GHOST to direct your words in BOO city? LOL

I consider Joel Osteen to be a false prophet, but it is not surprising that Houston would ask him to do this. Afterall, Houston is bringing in money because of him.

Not a fan of anything happening here.

What is more troubling is that I highly doubt Pastor Osteen would be able to cite any biblical injunctions against immoral behavior if queried. After seeing several interviews where he more than loosely quotes, or alludes to, Scripture his biblical theology is similar to the vapor of Solomon in Ecclesiastes.

One side note: Lakewood Church has been presented with the opportunity to outright purchase their current, leased facility from the city for a sum less than their current deal. Maybe this is a way to assist that process.

I have no problem with him giving the invocation. That's not the time to deal with personal or political issues with the person coming into office. Now, Osteen does have very serious problems with biblical theology. My pastor believes Osteen himself is saved, but that Osteen is a very weak, wishy-washy preacher.

Totally off-topic, but I though they already owned the facility. Osteen's theology aside, the old Compaq Center has been an albatross around Houston's neck for a while, and if Houston doesn't sell it to Lakewood Church, they'll just be throwing money at it for decades in a wasteful fashion that is all too common in municipalities that own such venues (a la Inglewood's Great Western Forum, which is anythign but great these days).

Yeah. John the Baptist should have kept his mouth shut about Herod, as well. That way he'd still have his head attached.

That doesn't mean your pastor is correct. Osteen is not a preacher to begin with. He's a feel good inspirationalist. Whether he is saved or not I obviously can't say for certain, but based upon his positions I'd say it's unlikely.

In regards to the OP, it's just another reason Osteen should be shunned by the Christian community. Giving the "invocation" for an open homosexual speaks volumes about his non-walk with Christ.
