Cheney backs 'Don't Ask' repeal

Former Vice President Dick Cheney, who served as defense secretary under President George H.W. Bush, expressed support for the repeal of "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" policy, which President Barack Obama has asked Congress to work on this year.

Cheney told ABC’s “This Week” that 20 years ago when he was secretary of defense, the military was a strong advocate of the policy that bans gays from openly serving in the military, but that “things have changed significantly since then” and he anticipates that ultimately “the policy will be changed.”

“I think society has moved on,” Cheney said the policy shift is partly “a generational question.”

It may not be a surprise; however, I think it will hurt his chances among social conservatives if he decides to run for president in 2012.

He is about as electable as Sarah Palin...a pox on any party that seriously considers either for the Presidency.

I think his daughter being gay, and his surrender in order to keep good relationship with her, has jaded his view..

I would take Palin or Cheney over any democrat, and over most Republicans, for POTUS.. Cheney will not run... and I'd prefer Palin as Vice Presidential candidate..

You are right about Cheney not running. And a majority of Republicans even think Palin is not qualified to be President of the US. A poll on television I just saw said 53 percent of the GOP voters hold that view.

Why should homosexuals be exempt from serving their country? That gives anyone who doesn't want to do that an out by simply claiming "I'm gay" (even if he's not) and being excused.

Not surprised considering his daughter is a homosexual.

What is wrong with "don't ask, don't tell" anyway? I would be ticked if I was asked if I preferred women or men in signing up...and I sure would not go to the recruiter saying "I'm here to join the marines, and oh...btw...I am a heterosexual".

conditions having to view all those you know what.

Homosexuals would enjoy the sight of nude bodies of the same gender, but I wouldn't want to be in the same shower with them. I've been propositioned more than once by such people. In basic training there was no such thing as privacy. We all slept in one big room (barracks). We changed our clothes together, showered together, and there was no door on the toilet; you could be seen as you sat on the stool; that is the one thing I disliked the most. That is the one time I definitely want my privacy, and we didn't have it.

I think you are painting with too broad a brush. As a heterosexual i would not enjoy the sight of every woman.
