Are we having more earthquakes?

I remember not too long ago the big concern was shark attacks, the media used a study that said there were more shark attacks to support their claim there were more shark attacks.
Problem was the study was based on media reporting of shark attacks, so as the news reported it more the study said there were more. I think this is the issue with the earthquakes. Our world is constantly shifting and moving, I don't believe this shows anything more than a bored media looking for more scare-tactics reporting.

Here is a site that shows the total number broken down by magnitude by each year, and gives a total number per year, dating back to 1990 up to June 16, 2009.
As can be seen there is a steady rise.
The source material is from the "National Earthquake Information Center, U.S. Geological Survey". Web: neic.usgs.gov/neis/eqlists/eqstats.html
From the sourse, here is the latest info of note in their aquisitioning of data.
There is another site I have to find that gives the same information as far back as at least the early 1900's if not further.

We continue to be asked by many people throughout the world if earthquakes are on the increase. Although it may seem that we are having more earthquakes, earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater have remained fairly constant.
A partial explanation may lie in the fact that in the last twenty years, we have definitely had an increase in the number of earthquakes we have been able to locate each year. This is because of the tremendous increase in the number of seismograph stations in the world and the many improvements in global communications. In 1931, there were about 350 stations operating in the world; today, there are more than 8,000 stations and the data now comes in rapidly from these stations by electronic mail, internet and satellite.

I'm not sure why you posted this from the same site where I show their own data of the 13,000+ increase of earthquakes over 18 years. 5000+ increase from 1990 to 2000 (a 10 year period) and a 7000+ increase from 2000 to 2008 (an 8 year period)..

It helps support, again, my point that - yes, earthquakes are increasing.However on phe previous years, they might not have had the amount of seismographs as today but we can average the amount based upon the known quakes over a certain and repeating time frame and then averaging that to what is seen today. It is alitlle more precise in the math than that but you get the idea.
Thus there is no uncertainty there is and has been an increase in earthquakes.
I think you all might be missing out on what "diverse" really means. Here is a fact I pointed out on my facebook page a few days back. The death tolls from earthquakes: In the 1980's there were 59,000 deaths from earthquakes. 1990's, 152,000 deaths. 2000's, 450,000 deaths. 2010... from January to present, 250,000 deaths.
The greek for diverse (poikilos) simply means unique or different in kind...not more frequent. These earthquakes are causing more and more deaths as they are hitting more populated areas causing a significant upward trend in deaths resulting from them. I think the prophecy of these earthquakes being diverse does not refer to the increase in number, but their uniqueness in causing more and more deaths. This truly fits in with "the beginning of sorrows" (Mark 13:8)

Seems to me the point of Scripture is not to be so concerned with the end that we miss the our time in the now. We can be mindful of these things but we need to effort ourselves to focus on how we live now. Too many Christian get to focused on the second coming and forget to live in the victory of the first.
I still say we'll be all in the ground for many, many years before Christ returns...though I am ready to be proven wrong.
Since the '80's? I don't think so. Faster maybe, but not more accurate.
We are commanded to keep watch, and Jesus did tell us to watch for the signs of His second coming for a reason.
I usually don't want anyone to be wrong in their understanding, but I hope you are wrong about us being in the ground "for many, many years before Christ returns".
