Three Border Patrol agents are assaulted on the average day at or near the U.S. border. Someone is kidnapped every 35 hours in Phoenix, Ariz., often by agents of alien smuggling organizations. And one-in-five American teenagers last year used some type of illegal drug, many of which were imported across the unsecured U.S.-Mexico border.

These facts are reported in the recently released National Drug Threat Assessment for 2010, published by the National Drug Intelligence Center, a division of the U.S. Justice Department. They ought to add some perspective to the national debate raging over Arizona’s new law that requires local law enforcement officers to make a “reasonable attempt” to determine the immigration status of persons they legally come into contact with and whom they reasonably suspect of being in the country illegally

This would go away if our kids would stop using drugs. Stop that and curb the drug cartel problems.

Enforce border and immigration laws and it will go away.

No, our kids unfortunately will find ways of obtaining illegal substances from the boarder area's despite border and immigration laws. However, I agree we should enforce the laws already on the books rather than create rights obolishing new ones. Stop kids using drugs and the problem goes away and so does the crime rate in our own country.

Kids using drugs is a separate issue. No one including Arizona has created any law that was not already in existence on the Federal level.

You are right Thinkingstuff. But, I say let's do both. Stop the flow of illegals and stop our kids from using drugs. Now, which do you think will be more effective or successful? I would suggest that there would be more success in securing the border than depending on egg headed parents.

I disagree. The specific incidents you mention are all related to drug use.

No they are not all drug related. Coming across the border to commit crimes is not the fault of children in the states. Criminals are criminals because they want to be.

and because of the opportunity afforded them to be. I wonder how many drug growers are such because it pays well or because they get their kicks making people suffer? I'm sure its the former rather than the later. The majority of people crossing the boarder are doing so for survival purposes. A minority of them for criminial. The majority of the Criminal are spurred on by money from illicit drug use. The kidnapping the moving of drugs etc are all drug related.

I understand correctly and in full. How many illegals have you spoken with? I lived in an area that was 66% Hispanic and the majority of those were illegal because of the grove and ranch work. They come here to make more money but survival is an exaggeration of why they are here. They like the prosperity of the states and work to send money home to Mexico. Much of Mexico's economy relies on American money being sent back. So instead of working to fix their own country they want to build their economy from American prosperity. They need to fix their own country.

My objection is not just with Mexico. We need to stop sending unending support to areas that are not willing to do anything for themselves. I don't mind helping but unending support is not sustainable.

Add to that illegals coming here, working, and sending money back home only props up the criminal government in Mexico. Their economy is what it is because of the criminal government. And their own President wants that money sent back to prop up their economy.

How many of those people come from their Mexico homes with running water? How many have regular electricity? How many eat meat everyday of the week? How many have dirt floors in their homes. How many have just one set of good clothes? How many have more than one set of shoes? I lived in Africa and I've seen poverty. People barely surviving.
So I'm certain that you don't understand the problem.

I agree, but that is parents teaching and bring their children up to the glory of God. But as long as we have our children seeing and reading about actors, singers and ballplayers who for some reason they look up to using drugs and telling the good of them, the problem isn't going away.

We worry about everyone's rights as we should but we don't worry about the rights of families who try and raise their children as they should.

This has nothing to do with survival. This has to do with better living conditions. There is a difference. But you avoided the majority of my post.

My friend, I was raised with out indoor pluming, electricity and had cobble stones for a floor and that right here in the good old USA. But we didn't know we were poor, and we ate well.

I've seen poverty too, in this country, Jamaica, Yucatan peninsular of Mexico and a few other places. Most of the time it comes from bad governments, a lack of concern for their own people, just for power. Is Zimbabwe better off today than they were as Rhodesia? I don't think Robert Mugabe care much for his people either.

I agree with you Mexico has a corrupt government. No doubt about it. However, that's why people in Zimbabwe are immigrating to South Africa and the South African's are doing a lot worse to them than we are to the mexicans to be sure. So you can see why the abused poor in Mexico want to enter into the US for survival and better living conditions. I'm not certain that if the US goes down the tubes and we have to buy bread with wheelbarrels of money I might not entertain entering Canada illegally.
