While numerous investigations will no doubt be launched into the companies behind the rig (BP, Transocean), will anyone ask what the DHS and The White House have been doing for 8 days, while an ecological disaster was unfolding in such a sensitive region?

Let's at least acknowledge the obvious opposite, that if we were currently in a Republican administration that had just okayed offshore drilling in America, and they had gone eight days without serious action, they'd be getting absolutely pilloried in the press.

    Yeap! It'd be "Bush's" fault alright! :tongue3:

.........But, at least he'd be quick to acknowledge the death of 11 people who worked the rigs and send condolences to their families.

    No one cares.

    Really.

    No one.

Even those who claim to be environmentalists are surprisingly silent. This will be an economic disaster, but again, no one seems to care much.

If it bleeds it leads is an old newspaper adage. From a media point of view this disaster doesn't look like one. How do you show oily water? Apparently this is a light sweet crude and not the thick black gunk that spilled from the Exxon Valdez. So how do you frame a shot of what look to be Karo syrup floating in the ocean? There is no raging fire with a plume of black smoke trailing into the wind. There is no massive kill of sea creatures. No ducks getting a bath in Dawn dish detergent. No mama seal lamenting her oil choked offspring. No.... you get the picture.

We've been conditioned by our 24/7 news cycle to expect our disasters to look like disasters.

Secondly, we want our news to be fresh. The spill in the gulf is like so last week...
