Back to comparisons. Don't you miss my comparisons?
The MLB now ranks #2 after the TNIV. It could very well have occupied the place that the NIV has enjoyed all these years (with some tweeking because some of its language is decidedly not modern). Sometimes the MLB sounds more contemporary or more casual in its phraseology. It just depends on the given passage.

    The MLB = M. The NIV = N.

    Matthew

    3:9
M : Do not fancy that you can say to yourselves
N : do not think you can say to yourselves

    4:10
    M : Be gone Satan
N : Away from me, Satan!

    5:47
M : if you greet only your kin
N : if you greet only your brothers

    7:14
M : narrow is the gate and contracted the road
N : small is the gate and narrow the road

    7:25
M : it never collapsed, for it was based on the rock
N : it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock

    9:2
    M : Cheer up,son
    N : Take heart,son

    9:22
    M : Cheer up,daughter
    N : Take heart,daughter

    11:16
M : calling at their playmates
N : calling out to others

    12:27
M : On this score they will be your judges
N : So then, they will be your judges

    13:12
    M : will receive superabundantly
N : will have an abundance

    13:43
M : Then will the righteous radiate like the sun
N : Then the righteous will shine like the sun

    13:52
M : Every teacher, therefore, who is versed in the kingdom of God
N : Therefore every teacher of the law who has been instructed about the kingdom of heaven

Isn't it odd to have a translation that is more colloquial yet more latinate?

I notice lots of translations are eschewing the word "lusts," instead opting for "passions." Rippon's beloved ESV does it :tongue3:
