Federal Court Rules: Cheerleading Not a Sport

HARTFORD, Conn. -- A federal judge in Connecticut has ruled competitive cheerleading is not an official sport for schools looking for ways to meet gender-equity requirements.

U.S. District Judge Stefan Underhill said competitive cheerleading is too underdeveloped.

The ruling comes in a lawsuit filed by members of the volleyball team at Quinnipiac University. The players sued after the school announced last year that it would eliminate the team for budgetary reasons.

We could call anything we want a sport. We could call nose picking a sport. The fact that this needed to go to the fed court is what is re....uh absurd.

IT is in federal court because the federal law says that schools must spend equally on men's and women's sports. If cheerleading is a sport, it counts towards women's sports and therefore allows the volleyball to be done away with.

It is hard to justify any conclusion that says that competitive cheerleading is not a sport. But whatever ... There couldn't be a dumber issue. Schools just disband cheerleading.

Thanks for the good news. many of the Olympic events are not sports. If the outcome of an event can't be determined by counting or measuring it isn't a sport.

Cheerleading??

This is just one small step of many along the way to our messianic oligarchy,

Its not so much about cheerleading as it is CONTROL.

We are just too dumb too know certain things (uh, actually everything), so we need a Big Brother too watch over us 24/7.

Inter-Active TV coming to your home soon.

The alternative decision would have given public funds to cheerleaders. This would cause you greater happiness?

Well, no, but like I said Bill, it's not about cheerleading.

The cheerleading issue is a means to an end, a virtual political dictatorship masquerading as a democracy.

Have any of you men ever watched competitive cheerleading? It's not what you think.

Do you have any idea of physical shape these young people have to be in to do all of those dangerous flips and throws and gymnastic feats that would rival Olympic gymnastics. Are you aware of the physical work involved year-round for these competitions that are highly physically competitive?

We aren't talking about cheerleading of the 1950's where they just shook a little pompon at a game and said, "Go team, Go" and then after the game went and made out in the back of a car with the quarterback.

Watch the following video and then let me ask you some questions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af3UZlnaexI

Why is competitive cheerleading less of a sport than throwing a ball throw a hoop? It's just throwing a round ball through a round hoop for crying out loud! And most of the time the majority of the team sits on a bench. It's just sitting! Why is it less of a sport than running the 50-yard dash? That's just running. You start running and then you stop. A monkey can do that.

Why is it less of a sport that golf? Good googly-moogly, if that's not the most pathetic excuse for "sport" I don't know what is!!!!! Wear a little funny outfit and walk around with a stick and hit a little ball every now and again. Whoopty-doo.

Why is it less of a sport than baseball? Whack a big ball and run in a circle. Chew tobacco, ingest steroids, and make beer commercials. Oh, so very thrilling.

Why is competitive cheerleading less of a sport than any other sport. Give me specifics. Give me the definition of a sport. Tell me why it is not a sport other than the fact that it involves bubbly females in skirts.

Why would anyone think of cheer leading as a sport?

So they can justify their interest in it and not have to admit that they just like watching teenage girls in short skirts.

Now if we can just figure out why people consider NASCAR a sport...

Three kinds of "sports" are popular - war substitutes that produce blood, guts, and injuries, kiddy porn substitutes, and baseball.

Yes I have!!! My granddaughter did it in HS and college. As a grand parent you seem to have to watch what your grand children do, and cheerleading and soccer were very hard on me. Then I have to tell them how well they did their deal and I don't know if they did it well or not. From my point of view, I would rather watch grass grow than either one of those.

I'm sure they both takes talent to do, but a root canal wouldn't be any worse for me. However I did enjoy watching my grand daughter in gymnastic, and my grand sons in basketball, football and debate.

I don't think the judge meant to say that it isn't a competitive sport. However, as far as being as organized as ncaa football, baseball, basketball, track, etc., competitive cheerleading hasn't reached that level.

Folks, read the article. The case was about the federal law requiring gender equity in college athletics. The university canceled the women's volleyball team and claimed that cheerleading was a sport under Title IX that enabled it to meet the gender equity requirements without women's volleyball.

The court disagreed.

An activity can be considered a sport under Title IX if it meets specific criteria. It must have coaches, practices, competitions during a defined season and a governing organization. The activity also must have competition as its primary goal -- not merely the support of other athletic teams.

The bottom line is that the federal law is messing with the institution. The school says it doesn't have money for women's volleyball. The players sued and won. Now the school has to take money away from something else and give it to the volleyball team.

It's probably the right decision under the law. It's just a bad law.

Competitive cheerleading meets all of these requirements. It isn't about cheering at the big game.

Just sayin'.
