A few years ago, I had some health problems that appeared to be very scary. Although they turned out to be very minor and easily fixed, it still caused my wife and me to seriously re-evaluate the food we eat.

One of the first things to go was soft drinks (or Co'Cola, as we say down South). The effects were immediate and significant.

Don't get me wrong, I still like to have a Coke on occasion (I'd like to have an RC, but they don't sell that up here where I live now) but it's pretty rare.

When I was in high school, one of our teachers took a bottle of Coke and put a nail in it. Three days later, the nail had been eaten away to almost nothing. I should have learned my lesson then, but I didn't.

Giving up Cokes was the best thing I ever did for myself and my kids.

I agree that an excess of any soft drink will be detrimental to overall health, but I disagree that drinking one or two a day will be all that harmful.

About the nail in the Coke thing... That nail would have been gone even faster if it were placed in stomach acid! Coke is slightly acidic, as are some of the healthiest products for us, from vinegar to fruits.

As a sideline issue, what did people drink in ancient times? (Yes, this is a trick question.)

I have a cousin who had his Mountain Dew EVERY morning for breakfast. He had to have all his teeth pulled before he was 40.
