You beat me to it. Children need discipline - both affirmation for good and punishment for bad. All around us we see the results of a generation whose parents believed that nonsense about not spanking your children.

Not really. When I was growing up in the 80s and 90s, spanking was still the norm. Everyone I knew was spanked. Some turned out good, some not so good.

In any event, it's not the spanking, but the complete lack of effective discipline.
