Seems like this trend has accelerated since the Bush-Gore election. Democrats were angry at losing an election in which they had many more individual votes.

The dense populations of the east and west coasts, which lean heavily to the left, would be very difficult to overcome by right-leaning red states in the middle of the country. So, naturally, 1-person-1-vote sounds pretty good to Democrats, and they have the ignorance of Americans in areas of history, government, and law on their side.

How can conservatives address this issue?

It is up to each state to decide how to award its electoral votes. Sadly, IMNSHO, there is nothing that can be done if states decide to do this. I am a shocked that any state would give up what little sovereignty remains with this kind of decision.

Since California would not adopt their own proposal unless enough other states also adopt it, conservatives need to campaign in the remaining states to see that they do not adopt this proposal.

Being a city person, fine with me. The president would be elected by a half dozen metro areas and the farm states would save listening to political commercials because no one would care what you think.

The electoral college is one of the brilliant items devised by the founders of this nation to ensure that: a) every vote counts, b) states' rights are elevated above the federal government, and c) that population centers don't control elections.

It will be difficult to get the electoral college dismissed since it is such a significant part of the Constitution. Hopefully the sanity of the few in Washington who can think objectively will prevail over enough people to keep this system in place.
