Every American female who gave birth while in custody for breaking the law and went through being shackled during their labor and hospital stay should immediately be given $200,000 unless they reverse this decision.

How stupid is it to break the law, claim you want to be a citizen, then whine when you're treated like a citizen would be?!

Wonder who foots the bill for her kids, her prenatal care, the hospital bill? Will this come out of her "winnings?"

How on earth is she a victim with a right to sue when she's been here illegally so long, deported, illegally came back again, and then wonder of wonders, got caught because she was doing something else illegal and happened to go into labor while in custody for all that?

Just another reason that both parties need to be thrown out of office and people put in who will makes laws that require ever illegal to serve 5 years no parole with hard labor to pay for their keep and then deport them after they serve their time. Also any children they have had while here cannot become citizens, hold any government job or office whether local, state or federal through three generations. deport, deport, deport

Naturally this had to happen right here in good old Metro Nashville-Davidson County!

In all of the local news outlets' coverage of this law suit, I only saw one account that even mentioned the fact that she was here illegally, and that was just in passing. I'm wondering if our local property taxes will have to be increased to foot the $200,000 bill (not to mention attorneys' fees and other associated court costs)?

I'm also wondering what kind of outctry there would be if the tables were turned, i.e., suppose that a pregnant woman who was an American citizen were jailed and shackled in some third world country. Would she even be able to sue the local authorities for what they had done to her? Would all the bleeding heart media jump on her case and time after time print/broadcast multiple headlines complaining about her mistreatment and demand justice for her?

I, for one, don't plan to hold my breath waiting to see that happen.

I did end up looking up laws and found that the state she sued in just happens to be one of the states where that IS not legal.
It's legal in 40 states, if I remember right.
However, it appears it is still legal if there is cause to believe the person could be a flight risk. While I doubt if a woman in labor is gonna get up and run, she also complained that the officers didn't leave the room while she got changed into the hospital gown. As if leaving a prisoner unattended is the right thing to do.

Oh well. She wins. Won. Will continue to have the upper hand. I guess crime DOES pay for some people. Hrm.
