National Guard tries to drive under water

There is a segment of our society that runs toward danger while everyone else is fleeing. Police officers charge into domestic situations that strain their equipment and training to the limit. We lost a young deputy just a few weeks ago due to one of these situations. He would have been much safer to sit in his cruiser. Firefighters enter burning buildings pushing the limits of their equipment and training. They would be much safer parked at a distance. EMTs tend to accident victims on the highway while cars zip by at 70 mph. Well, that's dumb....

Soldiers run to danger while others flee. Many times they respond when they are outnumbered and outgunned exceeding the limitations of their quipment and training. It happens a thousand times a day while we sit in our warm, dry, safe homes. Imagine the outcry if the soldiers parked their vehicles on high ground and said, "I ain't going through that. I might get wet." while those trying to flee the danger were unable.

You call them dumb. I call them heroes. They are out there today risking death by fire, crushing, drowning, being blown to bits, shot run over.......

My soldier-son disarms bombs for a living. Every day tests the limits of equipment and training. It would be much safer for him to sit at home and do nothing.

Excellent post - let me join the chorus of those who consider these guardsmen anything but dumb. I can see the headlines if they had not tried.

Nah; see, I had my own agenda. You'll note that I previously provided a post with multiple, logical, intelligent reasons his assumption was unwarranted; and that I notified him that his posts were offensive, and asked him to stop doing the offensive things multiple times. Now, since he won't admit how invalid his position is, and he publicly refused a request from a fellow Christian, coupled with his obvious baiting over the last couple of pages, it should be pretty clear to everyone what kind of person he is; and thus, how little his opinions really mean.

Like an attorney cross examining a witness, you did a great job.

Better people to think you are wrong than to open you mouth and prove it. His comments provide more than enough proof.

It would have been better if they used common sense and turning around when they were starting to choke on water and going another route and not adding to the problem.

And the proof continues to build.

I believe FreeAtLast's behavior may be described as monomaniacal posting. "The soldiers were dumb." (repeat for days.)

He gets immersed in an issue and doesn't let go, just check out his behavior in the debt ceiling threads. Summary of his posts: "The debt is too big and it can't be fixed" (repeated forever.)

Very easy to make judgements from an easy chair, on the internet, with anonymity.

I admire these men (or women) for putting themselves in harm's way for others.

I am glad that you admire them and you should. We all should and I certainly do as well, but admiration is not extended where we do dumb things. They need to praised for what is praise worthy and be held accountable for what is dumb and these actions were dumb even if they were seeking good.

I am curious as to what technical, mechanical, military, or search and rescue qualifications you have to make that determination.

Well it is based on the fact that I know when I am about to drown as these guys should have also.

This thread should be closed. We've fed the silly tribble long enough.

Oh, I didn't know that they drowned! Too bad they didn't get drown-proofing training- oh wait they did - they are qualified to know the limits - unlike you, who would probably.. - (better not say, don't want to get banned)

The troops would have been a lot better off if they had brought a Gama Goat....

Gama Goat? Wow, you're that old?! I remember putting a clutch in one of those at Fort Irwin, CA in 1980. They had just reactivated Irwin as the National Desert Training Center and 4th ID got to run it through its paces. It was hotter than a pepper sprout and I remember how hard it was to touch anything metal - which on a Goat would be all of it except for the seat covers.

Remember the high tech way of deep water fording with a 113? It had a sheet of 3/4" plywood on the front that was hinged at the bottom. Push it out and hit the high seas. Remember the GOER? I went to school in Detroit to learn how to rebuild the drivetrain. That earned me the privilege of driving one 30 miles across theMohavee. They were supposed to float, too, but I would rather take my chances riding with the Jersey Guard.

I was at Irwin in '79 - for desert tng, and there was talk about actaviting the post as a NTC.

When I was in Wildflecken in'80, we went to Baumholder for FTX and we let our Goat and M 113's (CSC) go swiming - but before the Old Man let them go in, he required that all the PRC 77's (or was the '77 for 11 Bush?) be taken out.

Anyways we called the OPlan Wan's Navy after the CO.

Think of it Padre, if we hadent ETS'ed wonder where we would have our next PCS? Would have been nice to have been in CONUS a bit longer

I'm sure it was as deluxe in '79 as it was in '80.

Wait for it..... wait for it.... wait for it..... That was dumb. Sorry. I just could help myself.

My next tour of duty was to be 3AD headquarters in Frankfurt. I could tell you what I was going to do but then I have to kill you. Maybe I'd just wait for you to swim your Goat and you'd just drown but that would be dumb too.

No. I block your emails to keep me from doing dumb things.

Did I say dumb often enough? How about my use of
