Feds recommend ban on truckers using cell phones at wheel

I already thought this was the law for truckers, but if not it certainly needs to be passed and not just for truckers but everyone and with a very stiff penalty if broken. Then if broken and causing death it should carry the death penalty...

We already have laws on the books for reckless driving. As a conservative, I am against any cell phone laws. If I'm able to properly drive my car (or truck) and talk on the phone, leave me be.

But you are not able to do so and no one else can either.

I remember times when I had the radio on and as I was driving I was caught in an incident where a lot was going on at the same time and I reached over quickly and turned off the radio as it was distracting. Just a little bit of distraction can prove fatal and talking on a cell phone is just a bit distraction. Why? Because you are not focusing all of your mind on driving.

Haven't you ever ask another to stop talking when you are having to make quick decisions while driving? I have.

If such laws are for safety it is better to make a mistake on the side of safety than recklessness.

Then why not make a law that it is illegal to speak to another person in a car? How about a law that you can't eat a candy bar while driving? I got a good one, how about a law that you can't apply makeup while driving?

The point is that we don't need laws for any of these. We already have reckless driving laws on the books. Simply enforce those and utilize those. A law banning cell phone usage in a car is that same as hate crime laws when we already have battery, murder laws, etc.

We should be focusing on limiting government involvement in our lives, not increasing it.

Yes I agree. Some people think they can drink and drive and focus. Then they kill someone and it is very difficult to un-do their deed. Any person who drinks and drives and is responsible for a death should be given the death penalty. The same with any other law that is violated such as speeding and a death, or if there is cell phone laws and a death or any other law that is knowingly willfully broken and causes a death.

Applying makeup and driving makes someone more reckless. Do you want a law on that? Eating food while driving makes someone more reckless. Do you want a law on that? Scratching an itch on your foot make someone more reckless. Do you want a law on that?

As to reckless driving covering cell phone usage--maybe it does and maybe it doesn't. Most states have an itemized list of what constitutes reckless driving. Perhaps cell phone usage and texting should be added to the list of definitions for reckless driving. In other words, we don't need a separate law, just a refinement of current law.

The end result in heaping unenforceable driving regulations on us will be mandated public transportation. If everyone drove like everyone else was out to kill them, then we would never take our eyes off the road.

I know back in the late 70's some were pushing to take away the CB radio from truckers, also to stop drinking coffee. I've drank coffee, tea ate and talked on the CB for years whiles driving trucks, also have used cellphones too, from time to time. That is over a lot of years from 1964 till July of last year. No accidents driving. Got hit by a car while sleeping on break in a rest area and one in a town, got hit by a car while sleeping.
Get up in a truck and look down into the cars and you will see most are talking on the phone. You can tell most of the time when the driver of a car is talking on a phone, speed drops, then they get off and the speed goes back up.
No new laws are needed. Didn't NY pass a law about driving and talking on the phone, look into the cars and you see most or should I say well over half are talking on phone. It is a law that no one seems to be able to enforce.
