Give Perry a free pass for double dipping?

If his pension is as an employee of the State of Texas - he should not be double dipping - especially at those amounts.
Should we hold someone to a standard which we wouldn't uphold ourselves?
Are you really telling us, bill, that if you had your pension coming and still had another avenue for income that you would defer the first until the "right time?"
I am not even suggesting that SS be reduced due to a private company retirement program. I am talking about excessive government retirement.
Reasonable yes - excessive no
Retirement and health benefits is a major factor in our government budget shortfalls.
I understand it is legal - but since it is excessive - then the law needs to be change. I would relucantly agree to grandfathering current employees with 10 years or more of service.
If he worked to receive it and it is legal, good for him! I do hope he uses it wisely, but that part isn't my business. It does annoy me when people get upset over others who do perfectly legal things as it appears to be nothing more than simple jealousy.

I'd be happier if he shared with me, but that's okay. I didn't earn it, he did. Congrats to him for sticking it out, having business savvy, and making things work to his favor. There's no reason to change the law simply because we didn't choose paths in life that lead to riches.
Be happy with what you do and what you have. If you're not, don't be jealous of others. Just change what you're doing if you find yourself upset over someone else's success.

It is not a matter of being jealous. Currently our federal government is experiencing severe financial problems. Many States or Commonwealths are seeing the same situation. The county I live in has had to make major cutbacks due to less state aid. The only income is from sales tax - which may only be increased upon approval of the State and Property tax which now is limited to an increase of 2% per year.
And yet public employees who are making 6 figures are insisting they need a pay raise.
Yes, I did run for public office - and one of my platform items was I would vote against any pay increase for elected officials - and if passed - I would donate any increase to a 501c within my district. The current pay was some 80,000 dollars per year - for a part time position.
Personally I would like to see the government run more like a business. If you have the $$, yes you can spend it. If you don't have the dollars - your must cut back .
As a Medicaid taxi driver, I see extreme waste of tax dollars.

True, but Salty...there are lots of ways to cut budgets without cutting pensions and paychecks, from small operations to large ones.
Think schools...right now, some can't even buy books, but are getting specific grants to buy insanely expensive state-of-the-art equipment for yearbook and such. Why not refuse those grants and explain that "hey, our kids don't have books to take home and study, we appreciate your generosity, but can we use it for BOOKS?" (seriously, there are kids with poor grades who can't study at home)
Upper levels...do you realize how much is spent yearly on snacks, lunches and dinners? Why not have everyone bring their own sack meals or lunches? Shoot, make things potluck. LOL Don't spend a year's salary on just a couple dinners that people can bring themselves from home if they can't make it through a meeting, don't have it catered.
Don't spend thousands upon thousands on silly surveys.
Buy cheaper toilet paper.
Don't fly first class on government money unless it's a working flight and you can prove it.
Etc..
No reason to take the money one individual earns. It might be a nice gesture if the person didn't take as much as they earned and had a right to when it's a lot, but it isn't going to change much overall and he probably pays almost as much in taxes than a lot of us here make in a year. He probably helps out our economy with his purchases and spending and helps contribute to some places staying in business. We NEED individuals with decent incomes. They help our nation stay stable.
