The Rev. Pat Robertson says America should legalize marijuana. Would Jesus agree?

Msnbc.com put that question to a few theologians and religion experts, and the answer is … decidedly hazy.

Robertson, the outspoken Christian evangelist and host of “The 700 Club,” made national headlines this week when he told The New York Times that pot should be decriminalized and treated like alcohol because the government’s war on drugs has failed miserably and is costing taxpayers billions of dollars.

“I’ve never used marijuana and I don’t intend to, but it’s just one of those things that I think: this war on drugs just hasn’t succeeded,” he told the newspaper.

Scholars disagree on whether the Bible lays down the law on use of mind-altering drugs such as marijuana, also known as cannabis.

"It’s not so simple that you can just go to the Scriptures and say, 'Hey, that (passage) says marijuana should be illegal,' or 'that says marijuana should be legal.' There is no such passage," says Father Thomas Reese, S.J., senior fellow at Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University.

Sure, why not... Pot is all natural, just like poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, arsenic, heroin, radiation, etc. :wavey:

I'm not for it, in case you missed my sarcasm...

I'm an ex hippie from the late 60s and 70s. I've seen first hand what happens to people when the smoke pot for decades. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

As in, they are still hanging around in the sme places, still using the same language, wearing the same hair styles (except for the graying and bald spots), still sharing the same women, and still just as worthless as the were way back then. A few actually went on to hold semi-decent jobs, but just so that they would have a paycheck to buy more dope for the weekends.

Might not be all that some have blamed it for over its life, but it is certainly a lot less, in that once a person starts the use then stop doing EVERYTHING ELSE of consequence in their life. Only thing that matters is the next joint.

I wonder what those in Mendocino County, CA think?

I wonder what Dick Cheney thinks?

After watching the 700 Club a few times over the years (very few), I think Pat takes a toke or two or three or four right before one of his long prayer sessions, where he sees a woman with a green polka dot shirt on in Fargo, ND needing blue shingles for her house instead of the tin roof that was just installed. The day he redirected the path of the hurricane with prayer, he had to have gotten into marijuana laced with LSD.

Send me a dollar and I will pray for you also.

All the hippies would pull out of the public forests. Should make their life easier.

I'll laugh if Robertson retires and starts a hobby farm.
Hey, here is an idea. Pat Roberston and Pat Boone could start the Pat Club. Pat R could be in charge of the drug department and Pat B could be in charge of gang apparel.

I don't necessarily believe in legalization. I do believe in decriminalizing it. Our prisons are getting to overclogged by people committing petty crimes such as possession of marijuana. They go in as potsmokers and come out hardened criminals. Trying these people and incarcerating them is costing taxpayers exhorbitant amount of money. I should know. I've been working in the prison industry for over 20 years and I've seen timid new inmates become fullfledged gangbangers and thugs because of going to prison. Then they come in for worse crimes every time they show back up.

1. Pat Robertson is not a Theologian, Religious expert, scholar, or evangelist...Whether he is a Christian will remain to be seen.

2. It seems that after a long career of doing the opposite, he has finally taken the correct view on an issue. So for that I give him kudos.
