Should we see ourselves as beggars, humble in spirit, when coming to God and living the Christian life and if so what constitutes doing that?

Psalms 34:18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Matthew 11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Instead of a beggar, why not viewing yourself as a slave of God? People always say we are servants of the Lord, when in reality, servants earned their keep. They were paid for their work. A slave was owned by his master and did as the master told and commanded him to do. Just as God is our master, we are commanded to do things and told things to do throughout Gods word. Remember we were bought with the blood of Jesus on the cross. We are sinners and once we accept Jesus as our savior, we are bought with the blood of the cross and become slaves to our God our Father/Master.

That's the way I look at it.

A beggar who has a humble heart has nothing to offer the Master. Their only hope is the mercy and grace from the One they are seeking something from. In the times of Kings when a beggar came near the Kings table if the table was set with all kinds of food and the King only threw the beggar the scraps from his plate the beggar did not complain or expect more. The scraps were more then he was worthy of and more then he expected. I think today we many times complain at what we have been given thinking we deserve more.

Christ said we are not His servants we are His friends. John 15:15

Friend does not take advantage of the friendship.

    Friends are not presumptuous.

Friends listen and visit with each other - often.

Friends are quick to work together.

    Friends are not puffed up.

Friends guard their friendship and gird up the friendship with iron.

Friends share and the closer the friendship the more intimate the communication.

Proverbs 18:24 A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

I am a servant of God.

Jesus died on the cross to give me the choice to follow or reject Him.
Each day I have the choice to live my life in His service or serve others.
Each day I can listen to the Holy Spirit or ignore His prompting.
Each day I can go into my prayer closet or stay out of it.

I understand your concept of being a slave, as in many ways I am, by choice. Just prefer to consider myself to be a LOYAL servant, kneeling at the Master's feet. Freely accepting Him as my Lord and Saviour.

We come as beggars, we are adopted as sons...

    Galatians 4
4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

When I came to the Lord, I came humbly and contrite, like the beggar with nothing to offer but my filthy rags of sin. He lifted me up, set me at a station high above what I could dream...a daughter of the King! No longer a beggar, but royalty with the finest of white robes set aside for me, a mansion built on streets of gold.

I do not believe God wants us to be beggars. We are to be humble, not proud, because we did not earn the gifts he's given, but still holding our heads high, never ashamed of our Savior and our Heavenly Father.

    I like this thread.

We start as enemies. Colossians 1:21
We come as beggars. Matthew 5:3
We feel privileged to be slaves. James 1:1 (actually every epistle writer identifies himself as a "slave" of Christ.)
He calls us friends. John 15:15
We are adopted as sons/daughters. Hebrews 2:10

    Get your mind around that!
