Did the Son of God Die?

This is an oft debated issue and it far to often causes the Christian to move away defeated and there is no good reason for this to ever happen. First of all we need to understand some things that are being left unexamined by the soft soap preachers of today. It is important to understand that God is a spirit being and except for the spirit contained in each and every human-being on this Earth there is no similarity between the bodies of man and God, the Father.

In the first chapter of the first book of the Bible, the Triune state of God is hinted at twice when it is said “let us create” and “in our image..” Now remember this as I latter discuss the death of the man, Jesus. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are spirit beings as are Satan and all Angels. The Bible is consistent in it's teaching that man is eternal, even though we have died from the beginning. So, if we are created in the image of God, what is that image?

If the image of the God Head is not found in our body, where is it then. If the bodies of men waist away and if we are created in the image of spirit beings we must have a spirit component to our make up. But back to the death of Jesus. Mary was over-come by the Holy Spirit of God. (Luke 1:35) Mary did not have physical relations with God and there is no way the scripture can be twisted this way and we, the followers of Christ, must learn to put our foot down when the Atheist begins this perverted twist of the scriptures.

We serve the one and only Omnipotent and Omniscient God and since He is without limit there is nothing He cannot do! So, yes, Father God has the power to create a body to have relations with a woman but it is yet impossible for Him to do so because it would involve God committing sin and God's very nature makes Him sinning impossible. So it is left to a miracle as being the only possibility and that is exactly where God does so well. He is the maker of miracles!

But the question is, “Did the Son of God die?” The answer is no! We must agree that the body, Jesus, died on the cross, as recorded by several sources, but the Son of God went to Paradise and release the saints of the Old Testament, He was and is still alive! (Matthew 27:52, 53) This all took place while the body of Jesus, the sacrificial payment for our sin debts, lay in the tomb.

The good and the bad news of this is that, having the image of God as part of our make up, we also will never die in the sense that we think of it today. We will either live in Glory or in the Lake of Fire forever, however long that may be.

Bill, you rightly conclude that the body of Jesus died, but the Son of God did not die. This issue provided plenty of fodder for the Gnostic and Ascetic heresies of the Apostles time. Indeed, Jesus said on the cross to one of the thieves, "Today you will be with Me in Paradise" (Luke 23:43). How would that be possible if the Son of God was dead? The body laid in the tomb because sin had its required cost - death. But praise God that the same Son of God who laid His body down also took it up!

Romans 6:4-5 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,

    Ephesians 4:8-10

    New International Version (NIV)

8 This is why it[Or God] says:

    “When he ascended on high,
    he took many captives
and gave gifts to his people.”[Psalm 68:18]

9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions[Or the depths of the earth]? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)

    1 Peter 3:18-20

    New International Version (NIV)

18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 19 After being made alive,[Or but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which also] he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits — 20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,

Yes the Son of God did die.
    John 12:33
This he said, signifying what death he should die.
    John 18:32
That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.

    Acts 3:15
And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.
    Romans 6:9
Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

So yes the Son did die and was also raised from the dead.

Are you drawing a distinction between Jesus as a man and as God? Are you saying that the person of Jesus is different than the person of the Son of God? And by the way, what is your definition or understanding of the meaning of "son of God" since that is very important to your whole line of thinking?

Also, your definition of "die" is very important.

Jesus "died" in as much a real way as any other person dies: His Body ceased living and his spirit was separated from it. If your definiton of "die" is something other than this, total ceasation of existance, than you could easily say that no human being has ever died.

Exactly, Muslim apologists ask Christians this question too, and the unwritten assumption is that if "God" "died" then He "ceased to be God," making death a form of cessation of existence (which even Muslims do not believe).

Death is not a cessation of existence. Jesus as the second Person of the Godhead died much like we die: the body ceases to operate and the spirit separates. The difference is that we have no control over this operation, but God does.

This is another area I appeal to mystery. We cannot fathom the hypostatic union, and futile to even try.

Agreed, some people who like to think of themselves and intellectuals are always wanting to try to dig out what is not given in scripture. Everyone is talking way above their paygrade here.

    Can God hunger?
    Did Jesus hunger?

Perhaps we need to define death.

1 Cor 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received (from Jesus himself I might add), how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; (Not one word spoken about it being just the body of Christ dying here.)

Isa. 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Did that iniquity (sin) that was laid on him separate him from his Father God? Did that separation not leave his very life, (the spirit is life) in the hands of God his Father? Matt 27:46 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? V50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, Luke 23:46 said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.> (died)

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin death; If that did not take place then the bad news is you are going to be paid those wages.

Acts 13:30 But God raised him from the dead: (Who?) Gal. 1:1 Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead; ) ! Cor 15:16-18 For if the dead (Body and soul) rise not, then is not Christ (the once living soul) raised: And if Christ (the one who died body and soul) be not raised, your faith vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

Jesus was the Lamb, the Son of God slain in the mind of God from the foundation of the world, however also in the mind of that same God, who cannot lie was this given as a promise before the beginning of time, the foundation of the world: the hope of eternal life. That hope was given for the Lamb, the Son. FAITH is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. It was this FAITH Jesus, the only begotten Son of God born of woman, died in.

The gift of God is eternal life. It becomes our gift through Jesus. That means it was given to him and then can be given to us through him.

Salvation was wrought for you; by the grace of God the Father, giving life to the Son of God through the faith of that Son by washing of regeneration and renewing of the Spirit Holy. That renewing of the Spirit Holy is the same as stated in Acts 2:33 of having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit. It then could be given to us see John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

How long was the Son separated from the Father?

Acts 17:3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered (died), and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. 1 Cor. 15:4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

The thief asked for something pertaining to Jesus coming in his kingdom and Jesus answered him that day he died within the same context of coming in his kingdom.
1 Peter merely says that after three days the Spirit of God had quickened (made alive again) Jesus who had died and that God had also by that same Spirit preached in times past to the angels who had sinned.

Make corrections and so forth using scripture please.

free, I'm sorry to hurt your head but the one imperical rule of Hermaneutics must be oserved and you have just run away from it at full speed. With the understanding of basic Baptist doctrine, the whole Bible is the infalible Word of God, the rule is that no scripture, nor any group of scriptures, can be understood without the light of all other scripture shinning on it. Please, reread my post and do a Bible study, using the Nave's Topical.

What I have done is to point out the simple truth stated in scripture when it is taken in context. What I have diagramed here is an obvious truth when one is willing to dig into the Word of God and to prayerfully e led by the Holy Spirit. The child of Mary, Jesus, the man, was endued with a spirit being that in the normal man is the Image of God but in this case was God.

My understanding of the Son of God is that He is the second person of the Eternal God Head. He now resides in the body of the man, Jesus, by choice.

    No!

Yes and He got thirsty also.

Perhaps some need to understand God!

    Scripture tells us:

Colossians 2:9. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

If you people believe that God died on the Cross then you are saying that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit died. This entire discussion is utter nonsense. I can't believe what I am reading!

    Hebrews 10:4-12
    4. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
    5. Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
    6. In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.
    7. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
    8. Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
    9. Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
    10. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
    11. And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:
    12. But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

Please note what God tells us in the above Scripture. That is if you believe He was still alive when Paul wrote Hebrews.

Some years ago a heresy emerged called God is dead. Believe it started by some person in Atlanta. It died rather quickly. At least I thought it did. Is another such heresy starting on the Baptist Board?

Where do you get the idea that the "spirit being" in "normal" man is the image of God?

    12 Strings,
there are two working definitions of death, the end product of dying. These are est known as the First and the Second Death. The body of the Son of Man died, the Son of God, as shown in my post, was just as alive as it had been and will forever be and went into Paradise, not Heaven, (another problem area of human understanding from the lack of study) and He preached to the Old Testament Saints and released them to asend into Heaven.
