    San Jose: 21 people treated for burns after firewalk at Tony Robbins appearance

    SAN JOSE -- Amid inspirational talk, chanted mantras and shouts of victory at a late-night firewalking event attended by thousands Thursday came agonized shrieks from followers whose soles were scorched by the superheated coals, witnesses said.

    At least 21 people were treated for burn injuries after taking part in the crowning event of the first day of a Tony Robbins function downtown, including at least three who went to the hospital, a San Jose fire captain said.

    The people who suffered various second- and third-degree burn injuries were among more than 6,000 who attended the motivational speaker's event at the San Jose Convention Center called "Unleash the Power Within."

    After the event, which ended about 11 p.m., the crowd walked across the street to the park, where 12 lanes of hot coals measuring 10 feet long and 2½-feet wide rested on the grass.

    Jonathan Correll, 25, decided to check out what was going on when "I heard wails of pain, screams of agony." He said one young woman appeared to be in so much pain "it was horrific."

    "It was people seriously hurting, like they were being tortured," he said. "First one person, then a couple minutes later another one, and there was just a line of people walking on that fire. It was just bizarre, man."



    It's hard not to chuckle.

    Hey, those people could have come to MY house and I would have served up a little "tea and sympathy" and we could have talked out their fears and I wouldn't have charged NEARLY has much as Tony Robbins - and I wouldn't have burnt their feet!

    We laughed and laughed at this during dinner. There is a bit of a parlor trick mixed in with the science of the skin to the walking on coals thing. It has nothing to do with how motivated someone is or isn't.

    People are gullible, yes but this manifests in many ways. For goodness sakes as an example, people in conservative churches think David Barton is a qualified historian.

    I had the opportunity to go to one of Tony Robbins' seminars. The guy was amazing in the way that he had hundreds of businessmen in suits eating out of the palm of his hands.

    As to being a charlatan, I don't believe so. People pay him money to get motivated, and he motivates them. There's no trickery in that. Now, the fire-walking thing, that's a little over the edge.

    But the guy is a great motivational speaker.

    Of course he's a charlatan. Have you seen what it cost to partake of his seminars? And he pumps you up in the first one and gets to fire walk and keeps you screaming and jumping up and down like you are at a Superbowl game for hours and hours and hours and THEN solicits his $10,000 Master Univesity course.

    People who are willing to shell out that kind of money are already movitated to believe anything he says.

    Don't I know it! This past 4th of July my church had a hamburger supper in the gym and while we were a captive audience, we watched a David Barton film. I kept my criticism of the film to myself, but I say here that his subject matter was taking all the statues and paintings of men in the Capitol Building and telling anecdotes about their lives and quotes from them "proving" they were Christians.

    Some of it was inspirational - John Quincy Adams writing a book for his son about how to study the Bible. I've order that book from ebay and it should be in soon.

    But some of it was "spin" on these men's words - and wasn't proof at all that (a) they were individual Christians or that (b) they promoted Chrisitianity.

    For example, Ethan Allen allegedly said, "In the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress, open the door!" when capturing a British fort. David Barton took this and went on and on and on how this was "proof" Ethan Allen's lifestyle of Christianity.

    I didn't see it and that was not the only stretch he made.

    Agreed. A friend of mine treated me to one of his seminars. Excellent speaker/motivator. As in anything in life, we must choose where and when to draw the line. I won't be walking on any coals for anyone........

    I have been thinking of this thread since I read it and it made me think of something.....I have a bucket list. One of the things on it, and every single time I talk about it (every year) I get "booed and hissed" about it...to the point that my better half has indicated that this is grounds for divorce. I want to run with the bulls. On any given day, I think of what a horrible idea this is, (but what a thrill!!!! - of course, if I don't get killed) for some reason, this has been in the back of my mind now for a good twenty plus years.....how insane is that?
