Protest - Flying Flags Upside Down, Country in Distress

DORSEYVILLE (KDKA) — It is becoming a growing form of protest over the outcome of the Presidential Election; people flying the American Flag upside down. But now those protests are sparking a protest of their own.

On rooftops or front porches, our flag is displayed as a symbol of our national pride.

Larry Guerrieri fought beneath the flag in Vietnam, but outside his Dorseyville home Thursday it was flying upside down.

“That’s a sign of distress; this country is in distress right now,” said Guerrieri.

We will probably never fly the American flag at our house ever again. We have my dad's and my brother's flags in their special cases from their military burials, but the American flag will not be flown outside our house ever again. The Country that my dad and brother served is gone. :tear:

I do want to take this moment in honor of Veteran's Day to thank those who are serving now and have served. God Bless You.

What branch of the service did you serve in?

Yes they are. Flying the flag upside down can be used as a sign of distress in certain limited circumstances, but an election not going your way isn't one of them. In fact, in this context, it is a sign of contempt. I can't speak for other states, but in Florida it is a crime to cast contempt on the flags of the United States, the State of Florida, or the Confederate States. In other words, if someone tries that here, it would not only be unpatriotic, but a criminal offense.

During Vietnam when the hippies flew their US flags upside down we considered them traitors and made up slogans like 'America - Love it or Leave it!'

Many of them were veterans.

Maybe we were wrong.

Maybe they were true patriots after all.

I am posting this with the assumption that my view is valid because I was there in the 60s and 70s when this was going on.

Could we just clarify please? Are you saying that anyone who considers it wrong to fly a flag upside down and expresses their opinion about it is a government bootlicker?

Personally, the saddest visual image in recent times that this veteran of close to 23 yrs of total combined service in the USAF/TN ANG saw was on Facebook a couple weeks back.

It was a photograph of Old Glory, the Star-Spangled Banner, lying there, upside-down, on the ground, amisdt the rubble of the United States' embassy grounds in Benghazi, Libya.

Those 4 bayonet-bearing USMC Corpsmen whose lives were lost didn't choose to be there---they were ORDERED to be there!!

Personally, I don't care that much about the party affiliation(s) of who it was that ultimately ordered them to be there [Remember the USMC barracks in Beruit, Lebanon, in the early 1980's? I still do!].

Nor do I know whether or not any of those 4 Marines who died in the line of duty there were/are my brothers in Christ.

But THIS MUCH I DO KNOW: There now are at least 4 more families who'll never see their loved one again......Why?

Viet Nam was a wrong war. Why? Because it was political and was never declared as War by Congress, so therefore was unconstitutional. The last war that Congress declared was WW2.

And look what has happened after thousands of our troops were KIA, MIA, wounded, and maimed and suffer PTSD!! We are now trading partners with Viet Nam & China!!!

Our foreign policy has been messed up for decades!!!

Just like the US is the answer depends on who you ask. Some people do, and others do not.

That said, all nations do have standards of conduct and instruction on display for their national banner just as we have for Old Glory.

No matter what the issues or who does it I think flying the US Flag upside down is a silly and meaningless gesture that does nothing but add to the nation's divisiveness.

Many of us still love America and are not willing to just let her die on the vine because things don't go our way.
