if you're referring to the Marine who wrote Dianne Feinstein, based on the way he signed his letter (below) I would say he's likely out of the service already. Looks like he did eight years in active duty.

    Joshua Boston
    Cpl, United States Marine Corps
    2004-2012

So, if he is no longer active, he did observe discipline while in uniform and kept what he had in mind, in mind.

Then why did he sign it the way he did? Why bring his past service into it?

Once a Marine, always a Marine.

    I have no idea, brother.
Maybe he wanted to emphasize that he served, and fought, so that Americans can enjoy their constitutional rights which the lady is now working to curtail while at the same time enjoying the benefits of those rights herself ?

What's wrong with the way he did it?? Do you see something wrong with his referring to prior service???

To me that is something to be PROUD of; not relegated to the back burner!!!!!

(Besides, it provides the obvious contrast between their personal philosophies of life that is not so obvious from just a "citizen"!!)

I think his signature block was entirely appropriate.

Well, my brother there, EWF, was active marine, and he loves the corps, and it is his mind that the corps should be seen as it is, and always will be, apolitical if not above politics, and marines, active or otherwise, should see it stayed that way.
But, of course, I may have misinterpreted him.
I apologize if I did, brother.

Interesting. My father, also a Marine, would disagree in part. No longer being on active duty frees him from regulations that do govern the speech and activities of our troops, regardless of service. Additionally, the use of the signature block does not imply he is representing the Corps.

But you must realize, this is a new generation coming out. More outspoken....You Pino are probably familiar with my generation....men like James Webb, I believe he still serves as a State Senator in Virgina. Thats the type I am referring to .... As he states"we are not political, we are military. We go anywhere in the world they tell us to go, any time they tell us to , and fight anybody they want us to fight. Hoorah!

I would have preferred the kid kept his mouth shut & not involved the Marine Corps, because if this goes down wrong, then the Marines are inculcated in the issue & it is our culture to absolutely shun bad press. And if your a Marine, you will know this.

As a sidenote.... Marines serve the US Constitution & we also love our firearms so I can well understand the letter.

Dont feel so glum..... my family started in the Army, My uncle was a medic fighting the Nazi's & then my dad was a career NCO who actually became CIA.

But I prefer the culture & action of the Corps..... without making it a career. If I wanted that I would have gone into another branch of the military.

As I say, its changed quite a bit since I was there.

I can still get involved with "Toys for Tots" though...LOL
