Mother Shoots Home Intruder Six Times after Being Cornered in Attic

A Georgia mother and her two young children are unharmed after a man broke into their house with a crowbar on Friday, cornering them in an attic crawlspace. The woman was at home with her nine-year-old twins when the doorbell rang. When they didn't answer, the man reportedly went back to his car and returned with a crowbar. The mother said she could see the suspect-- now identified as Paul Slater-- trying to enter the house with the crowbar from her office window. Without hesitation, she grabbed her children, her phone, her gun, and ran upstairs.

I was reading about this yesterday. The intruder tried to get away and ended up in someone elses driveway. Not only did this woman save herself and her kids she could very well have saved a neighbor too.



A .38 is a fine weapon but a small powerful handgun can get "twisty" when fired, especially in rapid fire shooting like this was. She did a great job, hitting him 5 out of 6. However, with practice she could have had him down with 1 or 2. Remember, even a .22 is deadly.

I personally prefer a .45 auto.

Whatever you carry for protection you need to be so well practiced that your movements are automatic. Also, you need to be well aware of how the firearm reacts when fired.
Does it pop up and to the left? To the right?
Does it drop down close to its original position or is it pushing your hand all over the place?
Which is your shooting hand?
Which is your shooting eye?
Can you shoot off-hand?
Do you need to get a different firearm?

This kind of familiarity is a must.

Yea thats my choice as well....one round is sufficient but it appears to be a kidnapping. The guy went looking for her. And of course Jason, you have to factor in that she was leveling this at a human being....quite different from a target so.....anyway, dont even know if the 38 was hers or that she even handled it before. Lastly the distance could have been a factor. If it was my wife, for her protection, I would have a 20 Ga Single Shot & load it with buck....in that way she would not have missed & her nervousness would be a factor in operation. At home, I do seriously like k9 protection.....Shepherd breeds are quite athletic, calm but aggressive when provoked.....so is a Doberman. But that takes training too.

A dog, medium sized or bigger, is almost always a good addition to the family. They will take ownership of the people in their pack. Mine (collie/lab mix) even barks when unknown people are at the neighbors house.

Small dogs make good alarms but are too easy to neutralize.

Our dog is the same way. She has a definite change in tone when its an unknown person or if its one of her friends.

quite an affable dog, but can be very protective, and I don't know if she bites, but, if she does, I imagine the poor victim will have a hard time trying to aim at her for her size and her in and out and round and round snaps.
my dream gun, on the other hand, is a 10 round Glock .45 acp.
too expensive for me though.
I'll settle for a Kal-tek .380, cheaper, but does the job quite efficiently, from what I hear.
