A top Senate Republican sounded the alarm ahead of a major test vote on Monday that could clear the way for imminent passage of a sweeping immigration overhaul, saying the chamber is about to vote on a bill "no one has read."

Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., who for months has been fighting against the bill, accused the Senate of rushing to vote on the legislation amid a late push to modify it. At issue is a border security amendment being touted by supporters as a bipartisan compromise that could attract a large majority.

But Sessions accused Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of cramming the amendment into the rest of the "1,200-page" bill with the goal of advancing the legislation late Monday afternoon.

I've actually read the 119-page amendment. It's right here: http://www.judiciary.senate.gov/legislation/Sponsors1-(MDM13313).pdf

It is a solid, airtight package that won't allow any action on the rest of the provisions in the bill until border security is beefed up with 20,000 extra border patrol agents, 700 miles of fencing that essentially closes all the gaps in the border that currently exist, in addition to adding multiple layers of electronic border security that will help agents keep better track of activity all along the border.

I respect Sen. Sessions, but he is waving his arms and shouting "Fire!" when there is none. This is a good amendment that makes the overall bill palatable. Unfortunately, giving the existing undocumenteds a path to citizenship that requires them to register, pay taxes, back penalties and fines and not have a criminal record here or in their native country while greatly reducing additional undocumenteds is preferable to deporting all of them, which would cause riots.

Reluctantly, I support the measure. It isn't a good bill, but it is a good compromise.

Um...maybe I'm just being dense, but the link you provided is to an Amendment that's 867 pages long, not 119.

The amendment allows for "sufficient agents"; nowhere does it specify 20,000 agents. It adds extra "unarmed unmanned aerial surveillance."

The Southern Border Fencing Strategy is to be established not later than 180 days after date of enactment; the strategy identifies where fencing, infrastructure, and technology should be deployed. The strategy has to be submitted to Congress and the Comptroller; and if approved, then the implementation notice has to be submitted to Congress and the Comptroller. "700 miles of fencing" is not specifically identified anywhere in the document.

$6.5 trillion dollars is required immediately upon enactment of this amendment; $4.5 trillion of that total amount is identified for fencing.

Not enough time right now to do into more detail.

Sorry, I copied the wrong link. I had one for just the amendment, but now the only one I can find is the amendment connected to the entire bill. That's here:

    http://www.corker.senate.gov/public...with_Hoeven-Corker_Amendment_Incorporated.pdf

I believe you will find it says what I said it says. By necessity, the formula provided to figure total number of agents to be added comes to 20,000. Note that the amendment prevents those agents from being terminated, reassigned or otherwise shifted from the Southern US Border.

The op is a report of what the Senator has said. Can you prove he is incorrect? Has the members of the Senate actually read the bill?

Just another regurgitation liberal loon comment to boot. In the words of your favorite lady......"We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it"!
