The Supreme Court today struck down a key provision of the landmark 1965 Voting Rights Act which allowed the federal government to determine which states and counties can change voting laws and procedures.

The deeply divided (and obviously, political) 5-4 ruling nullifies a key provision of the Act, which for nearly 50 years has given the federal government the final say in everything from how some states draw their congressional maps to where they place polling stations.

Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts said:

“Our country has changed, and while any racial discrimination in voting is too much, Congress must ensure that the legislation it passes to remedy that problem speaks to the current conditions.”

At issue was Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, which applies a decades-old formula to decide which states and counties had histories of discrimination – and must, as a consequence, receive pre-approval from the federal government to change voting laws and procedures, or redraw voting districts.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott also put out a lengthy statement vowing to proceed with both a voter ID law and potentially a new set of redistricting maps without federal oversight.

Oh, careful, Mr. Abbott, the US A-G is apparently going to prevent you from doing that ...

Attorney General Eric Holder warned states against going too far. He said the Justice Department would not hesitate to take "swift" action against states looking to "take advantage" of the ruling.

By "take advantage" of the ruling, it appears Holder is saying regardless of what SCOTUS ruled, he won't let states change their policies. These people are truly wacko. What part of "strike down" does the Great Pretender's administration not understand?

Does this guy really not understand how utterly ignorant that statement is? Or does he seriously think he can write and enforce his own laws?

I hope Abbott calls Holder's bluff.

The black community has been given a "hand up" such that many of them have atrophied to the point they are unable to do anything without the assistance of others.
