Republican Resigns After Racially Charged 'Daily Show' Interview

A North Carolina Republican got more than he bargained for when he sat down with The Daily Show's Aasif Mandvi.

Don Yelton, a Republican precinct chairman in North Carolina, resigned Thursday after making racially charged remarks on the Comedy Central show while defending his state's voter ID law.

Buncombe GOP Chairman Henry Mitchell told WRAL that Yelton stepped down after being asked to resign. Mitchell said Yelton's remarks were "offensive, uniformed and unacceptable of any member within the Republican Party."
In his Daily Show interview, which aired Wednesday, Yelton slammed "lazy black people that wants the government to give them everything." He went on to admit he'd been accused of being a bigot before, but awkwardly added that one of his best friends was black.

Yelton also said the voter ID law was not meant to hurt African Americans, but rather would wreak havoc on the Democratic party because it would disproportionately affect Democratic voters. Yelton also noted that while Mandvi, who is Indian-American, looks different than he does, he treated the Daily Show correspondent just like anyone else.

"You realize we can hear you?" Mandvi said at one point during the interview.

It would be different if the guy had an original thought. But he starts talking about all these different people who will be affected and then refers to lazy Blacks.

It's hilarious because in my years of listening to conservative talk radio, I've heard the same talking points so it's easy to tell who is influencing the culture.

The renowned comedy program featured an interview with Yelton as part of a humorous segment on controversial new voter ID laws in North Carolina and other states across the South.

"The law is going to kick the Democrats in the butt," Yelton asserted, in contradiction to leaders in the Republican Party who have argued the law isn't about partisanship. "If it hurts a bunch of college kids that are too lazy to get up off their bohonkas and go get a photo ID, then so be it. If it hurts a bunch of whites, so be it. If it hurts a bunch of lazy blacks that want the government to give them everything, then so be it," Yelton continues.

In another exchange, the popular Gawker website notes that Daily Show field reporter Aasif Mandvi "attempted to prompt a reaction by declaring 'the law is not racist, and you're not racist.' Expecting Yelton to fire back with an unequivocal 'no,' Mandvi was instead treated to several long seconds of introspection, followed by, 'well, I've been called a bigot before.'" Yelton went on to bemoan the notion that it's acceptable for black people to use the term "nigger" but not for others to do so.

Mandvi, in disbelief at what he's was hearing, responded by emphasizing to Yelton: "You know that we can hear you, right?"

The shows are filled with undercover, bigoted statements that get repeated by the millions of listeners of these shows.

And the funny thing is that everyone of them seems to think they are being original whereas anyone who has listened to the shows has heard the same talking points and the same thought processes being thrown out.

First, I'm going to deal with your last citing first. It's laughable you would put that Ann Coulter send-up in the mix. You do realize, don't you, The Daily Currant -- note, that's spelled like the fruit, not the event, which is their first clue as to their absolute lack of seriousness -- is a satirical website on the level of The Onion? If not, you should have. What's even more hilarious is that "legitimate" liberal websites -- an oxymoron if ever there was one -- picked up the story as though it was true. That's how gullible you are, and every other liberal I've ever met, ditto. While the anti-Obama message might be something people would hear from Coulter, the rest is nothing else but parody. The Daily Currant is an online site whose "mission is to ridicule the timid ignorance which obstructs our progress, and promote intelligence -- which presses forward." The site launched in July of 2012 and is considered a competitor to another popular satirical publication, The Onion, which has also fooled mainstream publications with fake stories in the past. Note: The headline on the first article was not said by Limbaugh, it was the erroneous synopsis of the website, which by it's very title is left-leaning and therefore unlikely to recognize it's own prejudice and error.

Note: In the second, again, the website -- probably deliberately -- misrepresents what Limbaugh said. He didn't say blacks drove out whites, he said " ... Mayor Coleman Young who causes riots in 1967 in Detroit and Mayor Young caused a white flight to suburbia, and Detroit is left with nothing but liberal Democrats running it." That puts the blame for white flight on Young and subsequent Democratic leadership and their liberal policies.

Note: In the third, Coulter's comments are grossly misrepresented, quoted out of context, and in fact don't even use Coulter's actual column, but uses the ultra-liberal Huffington Post's synopsis of it, which was completely misleading to begin with, and your website added to the subterfuge.
