Did Lincoln violate the Constitution?

    Most Evil Person in American History????????

    I can't say I agree with everything in the list but I can say that Lincoln violated the Constitution and his oath of office. But apparently reading some history that is not the only time he lied! I posted the following on the thread: Most Evil Person in American History.

    Of course he was wrong. But there was no other way to save the Union, and in order to do that, he had to find an emotional issue that would rally the North around the war to stop secession. In slavery, he found it. In action, he routinely violated the Constitution. Was it necessary? I don't think anyone alive today can made an adequate judgment of that. The Union is preserved, and despite the best efforts of the ignoble traitor in the White House, it remains the greatest nation on Earth. Had the CSA won the war, what would have happened during WWI, WWII, the Cold War and the war on terrorism?

    For that matter, what would have happened in the effort for blacks to win their civil rights, the success or failure of the women's suffrage movement, and what would have been the overall economic effect on both nations during the Great Depression? Would Texas, which had little in common with other Southern issues, have exercised its in-state constitutional provision for secession and again becoming a republic?

    I believe the outcome for all three of those potential nations upon this continent would be significantly different, and not for the good of any of them, nor for Canada and Mexico either.

    Good points. I said on an earlier thread that I have always believed that the country is fortunate the Union was preserved. I have also believed that the Confederacy would have split apart even if they had been allowed to peacefully secede. They may well have eventually rejoined the Union. I have also believed that if Japan and Germany after WWII had been treated like the South was the outcome would have been totally different. WWII was caused in part by the treatment of Germany after WWI.

    Lincoln was probably the most dangerous president this country has ever been saddled with (and that includes the present one). He did not preserve the Union - he destroyed it. The US USED to be a group of sovereign states in voluntary cooperation for their mutual benefit. Lincoln destroyed the concept of state sovereignty by marginalizing the 10th amendment at gun point. He set in motion the federalization of the US (which Theodore Roosevelt finished) that has brought us to our present position of fiscal, moral, and ethical bankruptcy. :(

    WWI: The CSA would have supported their European allies.

    WWII: The CSA would have supported their European allies.

    The Cold War: The CSA would have supported their European allies.

    The war on terrorism: Hopefully the CSA would have been smart enough to know that the sectarian violence in the mid east has been going on for over 1200 years and US intervention will not stop it. Stay at home and take care of our own problems.
    Slavery was already on its way out and would have been completely gone by 1880. The same for woman's suffrage. And the CSA, being agrarian, would have fared far better than the industrial north.
    Probably not. Texas would probably been broken up into 5 states all being part of the CSA.
