Redskins respond to senators' name change demands: Why don't you do your actual job?

The Washington Redskins can't seem to find a coach and can't figure out how to win consistently. But give them this: They are not intimidated by politicians trying to turn them into the cultural crusade du jour. U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell and Tom Cole - a Democrat and a Republican, respectively - recently sent the Redskins a letter demanding that they change their name, calling it and insult and a slur. The Redskins were, uh, not impressed:

“Senator Cantwell should be aware that there are many challenges facing Native Americans, including an extremely cold winter with high energy bills, high unemployment, life threatening health problems, inadequate education and many other issues more pressing than the name of a football team which has received strong support from Native Americans,” the statement said. “Surely, with all the issues Congress is supposed to work on such as the economy, jobs, war and health care, the Senator must have more important things to do,” the statement said.

Boom.

Not only is the crusade against the Redskins not relevant to the real-life needs of Native Americans, but I don't even think the posturing here is designed to appeal to Native Americans per se. It's designed to create headlines that a) appeal to left-wing activists in general; and b) position the crusading politicians as righteous advocates of forward thinking without requiring them to really do anything of substance.

I'm proud (I speak after the flesh) to have "red" skin. I'm glad we are represented by gladiators on gridiron battlefields. It is an honor.
There are more and more liberal tribes, with overeducated female leaders in positions that we NEVER would have put them in, were we actually as traditional as we pretend.
So I speak for what I deem used to be a general consensus among Indians, that we are blessed the more that the public is reminded that we are here.
I hate Cleveland, but I wear an Indians cap, cuz I like the logo.
Redwings fan, but I wear Blackhawks gear, etc.
Our children are biased about our skin, they thank the Creator for it. Our skin heals quickly, needs no sunscreen, and keeps a 'tan'.

We are redskins. We are skraelings.
These descriptions don't hurt us.

This is exactly what my wife and I said to one another last night when she was watching the KU-K-State game and I was hoping the chicken-hawks would lose -- it gets interesting around our house, my being a Missouri fan -- and this story crawled across the bottom of ESPN's screen.

All the other stuff that needs to be addressed and these yahoos are trying vote-garner by essentially calling the Washington NFL franchise "racist." No, they didn't use the word, but they just as well have. These clowns don't even look at the polls, which clearly show a majority of Native Americans are not concerned/I] about the team's name!

A few years ago, I watched Bill O'Reilly discuss "offensive" sports mascots with a couple of liberals. I had the pleasure of watching it with a friend who is an Indian dancer, educator, re-enactor, and artist.

The one guest, who looked like every liberal, hippie stereotype you can imagine, said something to the effect of, "[Indians] may say they're not offended, but they just don't realize how offensive these things are."

My friend turned to me and said, "Oh, great. Another white liberal here to tell us what's good for us. That's always worked out well for us in the past, hasn't it?"

More than 100 years later, the infantilization of Indians by white liberals continues.

I think Bob Costas came closest to spilling the beans when he said that it doesn't matter if the Seminole Nation doesn't find Florida State's name offensive, it's offensive to the "rest of us", meaning his fellow liberals.
