U.S. officials announced plans Friday to relinquish federal government control over the administration of the Internet, a move that pleased international critics but alarmed some business leaders and others who rely on the smooth functioning of the Web.

Pressure to let go of the final vestiges of U.S. authority over the system of Web addresses and domain names that organize the Internet has been building for more than a decade and was supercharged by the backlash last year to revelations about National Security Agency surveillance.

The change would end the long-running contract between the Commerce Department and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a California-based nonprofit group. That contract is set to expire next year but could be extended if the transition plan is not complete.

“We look forward to ICANN convening stakeholders across the global Internet community to craft an appropriate transition plan,” Lawrence E. Strickling, assistant secretary of commerce for communications and information, said in a statement.

The announcement received a passionate response, with some groups quickly embracing the change and others blasting it.

Once again the USA is selling out for nothing in return. It is possible that Americans will lose control of their own websites and it is possible that the UN will impose a tax on the internet, which would mostly mean a tax on the USA.

The totalitarian Democrats have no idea what they are doing.

Then again maybe they know exactly what they are doing. Destroying our sovereignty by selling us out to the globalists seems to be what they do best.

But like I've often been reminded by my fellow BBers there's no such thing as the New World Order or global government.

Do you people even read articles? Or do you just post a knee-jerk reaction without facts? Where in the world does a UN tax come into play here?

What globalists is the U.S. "selling control of the internet" to? Please answer the question.

The facts are that the entity that assigns internet addresses, ICANN, and the U.S. are going to mutually end their contract, effectively ending what little influence the U.S. had over ICANN. Apparently, ICANN will still be the company that monitors and assigns internet addresses, but that's about all that can be gleaned from the article.

Nobody "controls the internet", except the entities that own and run their websites. It is possible for governments to deny access to server space that websites are hosted on but that requires government interference with website owners.

I don't know where Crabby heard it but I heard it from a former Bush administration State Department senior advisor named Christian Whiton.

The U.S. government’s plan to give away authority over the Internet’s core architecture to the “global Internet community” could endanger the security of both the Internet and the U.S. — and open the door to a global tax on Web use.

“U.S. management of the internet has been exemplary and there is no reason to give this away — especially in return for nothing,” former Bush administration State Department senior advisor Christian Whiton told The Daily Caller. “This is the Obama equivalent of Carter’s decision to give away the Panama Canal — only with possibly much worse consequences.”

    < snip >

“While the Obama administration says it is merely removing federal oversight of a non-profit, we should assume ICANN would end up as part of the United Nations,” Whiton said. “If the U.N. gains control what amounts to the directory and traffic signals of the Internet, it can impose whatever taxes it likes. It likely would start with a tax on registering domains and expand from there.”

ICANN’s Lebanese-born CEO Fadi Chehadé had already recently discussed setting up an office in Geneva — the location of the largest U.N. presence outside New York. If folded into the U.N.’s International Telecommunication Union, the organization would have access to a significant revenue stream outside of member contributions for the first time.

“What little control there is over the U.N. would be gone,” Whiton said.

“Under invariably incompetent U.N. control, it could mean a hostile foreign power disabling the Internet for us,” Whiton said.

Better hurry up and adopt this new neocon talking point before it's to late TND would hate to see you miss an opportunity to use the words "little Marxist". I mean hey this threatens national security. And them pesky Russians that are bound and determined to take over the world are probably behind it all!

As for me, at this point I just assume anything Obama does is designed to take our eyes off what Obama has already done. Like, nothing about the NSA grabbing Americans phone calls and emails without probable cause and spying on our allies.

Christian Whiton is a neo-con blogger and lobbyist. He is absolutely wrong about the U.S. and ICANN. Relinquishing veto power over URL address hierarchy is NOTHING like turning control of the Panama Canal over to Panama. His idea that ICANN will end up as "part of the United Nations" because they might open an office in Geneva is ludicrous. They are currently a non-profit entity located in Los Angeles. Also, the idea of a UN tax being imposed on the United States is just another wild speculation.

Time will tell in either case.

I just thought TND would like to know another neocon's take on it.

Didn't mean to call CMG Crabby. Sorry CMG my mistake.
