Putin's Historical Myopia

We are more flexible since 2012 and Putin has been behaving in a 19th century way. The Cold War was over twenty years ago. Besides, Putin has the military power and we don't. I assume Russian military power is what is meant by "dictionary."

 

The Crimea is none of our business. We would have done much that same thing if it had been one of our strategic naval bases in a country where the gov'mt was overthrown.

Of course, freedom is our business. It was Clinton who called Putin a Nazi when he really is a Stalinist, something even worse. True the area has been suppressed by Russia for centuries. However, the truth is that the USA is too weak to apply pressure to the Russians and NATO is a joke under Obama. But then the West has never been able to get the Chinese communists to stop the suppression of Tibet either.

Now Russia is threatening to establish military bases in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. Russia is on the march. Kings go to war in the springtime:

This is obviously the proper perspective. The Russian Soviet Socialist Republic ceded the territory to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in the 1940s. Now Russia simple unceded it. Under Soviet control they still had unrestrained access to warm water ports. When Ukraine started moving toward the EU those secure warm water ports were threatened so Russia just took the territory back.

What interest does the US have in getting involved in such a regional struggle?

 

So it is acceptable, even reasonable, for the US to have a military presence on Russia's borders, but if Russia and her allies agree to Russian military bases anywhere near US borders it is unacceptable?

 

C4K, you are too young to remember but after World War II, Russia dominated eastern Europe and there was an Iron Curtain holding those countries inside the Russian Gulag. People who lived there used to know how terrible murderers like Putin are.

But a new wave of isolationism has swept the USA from the think tanks of liberal Democrats and the overwhelming majority of Libertarians. As JFK used to say, don't worry they are still ninety miles away.

Nonsense. This kind of thing has happened to the U.S., and we have never, ever put armed troops on the ground of any of those nations sovereign territory to secure our bases. We have increased security within those bases, particularly to secure the perimeters. But invade a foreign country? Sorry, but contrary to the liberal mindset, the U.S. has never, ever done that without the the valid government of that country making a request of us to do so.

You've got to be kidding me, right? The writer, Vladimir Golstein, is a communist! He writes regularly for al-Jezeera, for cryin' out loud! Get real. He claims the underlying policies of the United States are unilateralism and hegemony. He denies the "indispensability" of U.S. positioning as an arbiter and, yes, policeman of world issues which, left to themselves, result in military takeovers like Putin has successfully effected in Ukraine without so much as a whimper from the Marxist White House.

In the hands of the right person, U.S. power is necessary to keep the rest of the world in check, whether or not that is an acceptable statement to hand-wringing liberals who agree with Golstein's ilk decry it as imperialism. Well, to them, I say the same thing Vickie Nuland said about the E.U., misguided a statement as that was.

Sorry, I couldn't get past this part, given (1) the number of corrupt authoritarian regimes Uncle Sam has propped up over the years, and (2) the rapid erosion of our liberties at home.

I wish it was the case that "freedom is our buisness", but those days seem to be a distant memory.

 

Consider if this was Panama and the US decided to "uncede" it, take it back. I suspect the entire world would be outraged.

Apprently that is exactly what it does or you would not feel a need to make such a comment. And your assumption about their motivation is most likely out of that shame.

Assigning motives to what people do is a tricky thing.

Good point. Things could always be worse, so it's logical to believe that if we can point to another country and say "well THAT hasn't happened here," then all is well.
For all the cried against Obama, people sure don't think he's done much for eroding your freedoms or compromising your security. So what's your problem with him? Quit your sniveling if you think the current administration hasn't caused problems in these areas.

How long until Putin/Russia is in our area? If you can accept what's going on now and viciously turn against fellow citizens who question the problems with the erosion of freedoms and liberties, how much easier will it be to make a few more concessions? If you're already on the road to conceding, what will stop you from continuing?
