Florida House passes ‘warning shot’ bill

The Florida House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed HB-89, a “warning shot” bill Thursday, allowing for a person to brandish a firearm or fire a warning shot when feeling threatened.

After two days of intense debate, the measure was approved 93-24, while the Senate tentatively approved a similar measure, according to the Bradenton Herald.

The bill was introduced by GOP state Rep. Neil Combee, in response to the notorious Marissa Alexander case. She received a 20-year sentence after being caught up in Florida’s 10-20-Life statute when she fired a warning shot to ward off her abusive estranged husband.

Strange, you get off free if you "stand your ground" and kill someone ... but are sentenced to jail if you fire a warning shot.

Not strange at all. If you feel threatened, you shoot someone. If you fire a warning shot, then you aren't threatened enough to fire at all.

Then obviously, you shouldn't.

Not to mention, where's the bullet go after a "warning shot"? The primary reason a police officer gets disciplined for firing a warning shot is that he cannot possibly know what or who might get hit by what amounts to a stray bullet. If they can't fire warning shots, why do private citizens now get to do so in Florida?
