Cassidy Vines was so horrified by what a teacher in Texas allegedly told her that she is planning on home-schooling her daughter after Christmas break.

Vines told Glenn Beck on Monday that she recently began noticing a change in her daughter’s behavior. Her daughter — who is in kindergarten — started to “snap” at her when she corrected her homework, saying “I’m her mommy, not her teacher.”

Vines said a few days after her daughter first snapped at her, she started pronouncing a word incorrectly. Vines corrected her daughter “in the most gentle way possible,” but she said her daughter broke down crying, saying “that’s how she was taught, and I can’t tell her something different because I’m a mommy, not a teacher.”

Vines said she was horrified and asked, “Is somebody telling you this at school?”

“She said, ‘Yes, I’m only allowed to learn from my teacher,’” Vines remarked.

Vines requested to meet with the teacher several times, but said she never got a response. So she went to her routine parent-teacher conference “armed with a slew of questions,” hoping her daughter had misunderstood what was being said at school.

“I was prepared to listen to what the teacher had to say, just in case my daughter was maybe stretching the truth a bit,” Vines said. “I kept that in the back of my mind to bring up with the teacher, but I was more concerned at the time with her new attitude that she brought home from school.”

Vines said she explained what was happening, and kept waiting for the teacher to deny it, but it never happened.

“[The teacher] goes on to tell me that they try to discourage parents from introducing contradictory concepts to ‘our’ children,” Vines said. “Our children. As in the school’s children? I was a little baffled. And so when I started talking about my daughter, I emphasized my daughter. So I asked her, ‘Am I not allowed to help her with her homework?’”

Vines was shocked when the teacher allegedly responded that they “don’t want parents confusing the kids.”

So 1 parent has a problem with 1 teacher. Did she talk to the principal? The school board? Did she do anything except talk to the teacher?

Seems pretty irrational to me to make a decision that can affect your child's life (for the worse or better) based upon 1 conference with 1 teacher. Frankly, I'd question whether the mother possesses enough common sense to home school her child properly.

Kindergartners do not have multiple teachers during the day. That one teacher is that child's whole day.

However, parents more and more do not trust our public school system. At this point it does not take much to place fear of the school and its agenda in a parent. There is good reason to fear our school systems.

A decision by a parent to home school is never taken lightly. It is also a fact that children learn far more in a home school situation that they do in public schools. Home schools kids are almost always advanced over their public school counterparts.

Some kids have multiple teachers in kindergarten. Mine did.

Some kids are home schooled by parents that shouldn't be homeschooling. I have come across children receiving very poor education in homeschooling.

Yes, of course I have. There are people who have received great educations through homeschooling and those that have received poor educations.

It's naive to believe that all kids educated by homeschooling receive superior educations.

Could you please cut-and-paste and then bold the "truly frightening thing" that this teacher allegedly told the mother?

(Ya gotta love that phraseology, "truly frightening" followed by "allegedly"...)

Cassidy Vines is a frequent Beck caller.

The teacher and the school are unnamed.

I noticed while reading this, I got an ad from him where I could subscribe to his channel, or stick with the "mainstream" media.

Did that happen? don't know. Could it? Absolutely.

With the government trying to cram a substantard and confusing new method of teaching down everyone's throats, we need to be on the alert.

    I would have a question...

    When the teacher said
, my question would be who is "they". That would be my next stop. When parents have no say over what and how and what their children are taught, we have truly given the government complete authority over our children. I wouldn't do that. I know none of you would either.

I understand that some parents my not be able to adequately home school students at some point, but kindergarten? Come on. That's pretty lame. If they can teach them their abc, how to count and read and do basic math, and I mean really basic math, they can do a bang up job of it in half the time.

But there was no indication in the part of the story I read that home schooling was going to be an option.

Well a lot of parents choose public school over home schooling because it provides exposure to social interaction with their peers. I can teach my three year old colors and the ABC's and we do work on these things with her but we also want to get her into a church preschool next year so she begins to acclimate to the classroom environment. Learning how to coexist with her peers is a life lesson that I can't teach at home.

Then there are working parents as well of course.

I'm not really buying the whole "giving the government complete control over my kids" either. I'm not saying parents shouldn't be alert to what happens in school but I doubt my next door neighbor scratching out 30K a year and buying half of her own school supplies is this dubious government operative with a mission to condition my children.

I find it utterly unbelievable that kindergartners have homework. And homework that would require Mommy's help. The whole story sounds made up.

Even if it were true, what is truly frightening about a teacher telling a parent not to contradict the teacher and cause confusion? Teacher is just doing her job.

I didn't have homework when I was in kindergarten. They pretty much just kept us alive for a few hours until mom picked us up. My daughter had four days worth of homework in Kindergarten but I was very impressed with the curriculum. She definitely benefited from it. She ended up testing at a 5th grade reading level halfway through 1st grade. I've also noticed that she is doing course material in second grade that I didn't see until third grade. It has been interesting to see the difference compared to my school years.

I live in Virginia so I'm not sure what the norm is. Thankfully we left Hawaii before my oldest was school aged. They have one of the worst public education systems in the country if not the worst.

I agree, but I'd be willing to bet that if you believed strongly enough that your child was being taught wrong and the teacher told you you had no say of how or what they were taught, you would move heaven and earth to find a solution to that problem. Tell me I'm wrong.

There is also no indication in this story that the mother is incapable of home schooling a kindergartner. She cares, or she wouldn't have confronted the teacher at all. It may be a perfectly viable option for her. We just don't know one way or the other.

Four days of homework per five day week? Or four homework assignments per semester? I've got two teenagers and I don't remember them having homework back in kindergarten. They went to a private Christian school.

    I didn't go to kindergarten.

But my kids did. and You're right , I don't believe they brought home "homework" , but they did bring home their days work and my wife and I, (mostly my wife) did go over what they were supposed to have learned that day.

In doing that you could easily uncover a problem...if there was one.

She had homework Mon-Thu every week. A few projects sprinkled in here and there. A book report, a science project, etc. I was a little surprised myself. Nothing major. We could usually handle everything in about an hour. They had this really good process where they would give her a sortable vocabulary sheet on Monday i.e. "ch words, etc." She had to sort them by word type and write them down. Tuesday night we would write them again by alphabetizing them. Wednesday we would write five sentences using as many of the words as possible and then they were quizzed on the spelling of the words thursday in school. She was reading 80 page chapter books halfway through 1st grade. It was a great way to expand vocabulary and teach word structure.

I want to know what my kids are being taught in all grades. The wife and I look through their work on a regular basis. We always know what is going on with them in their school and what they are being taught.

Teachers have no business telling children that their parents are not to tell them how to do the work. What they need to do is call the parents and have a conversation with them if they feel the parents are wrong and misleading the children.

And yes there are educators who work to undermine parents. We need to be watchful of what our children are being taught. Teachers should never undermine the parents. When it comes to anything with the children even education parents come first, not teachers.

No you are most definitely not wrong here. You are absolutely right that I would want to settle an issue like that with a teacher immediately. I'm just a little skeptical of this article in general as it wasn't outlined what specifically the teaching method in question was or what the dispute was over. A frequent caller that dials in to provide confirmation for Beck has me wondering if this is an isolated incident or a wide spread epidemic. My experience and those of other parents that I talk to is that the curriculum has been fine but the resources budgeted to schools have been the bigger issue here in Virginia.

The word "allegedly" should have alerted all of us that this story was , at the least, unverified. So we can consider it a good exercise in "what if".

Not a waste of time when one considers the direction our education system is heading with more and more federal government intrusion. So far, mostly for the worse. I believe common Core is a huge step backwards.
