Frank Phillips, a Knox County Sheriff’s officer, was fired Sunday night after a series of pictures taken by photographer John Messner were published in the Daily Mail in Britain. They showed an officer identified by the Sheriff’s Office as Phillips grabbing 21-year-old college student Jarod Dotson around the neck and squeezing him until he fell to his knees.

True Salty, very true. However it is illegal for a New York policeman to use a choke-hold, and yet the policeman in NY has not, to my knowledge, even been reprimanded or warned. Should he be fired. After all he broke the law. So many on the board scream that the poor man who died was committing an illegal act. Well, so was the policeman.

Eric Garner, a Staten Island father of six, was tragically killed last month by New York Police Department Officer Daniel Pantaleo when he put the asthmatic Garner into an illegal chokehold.

I normally prefer to give the cop the benefit of the doubt.

As I have stated before - do what the cop says-
If there is a problem then tell it to the judge.

So overlook it when a cop breaks the law or apply it selectively? That is a real slippery slope.

I would agree with you there. But this fellow did nothing, IMHO, to justify taking him down with an illegal chokehold and certainly nothing to justify his death.

A lot of white people say give the cop the benefit of the doubt when he kills a black man because most white people haven't experienced the police misconduct that so many blacks have.

The stuff yall are talking about is nothing more than slavery repackaged.

For just as black people were relegated to having to endure the beatings, the burnings, the public strippings, the hangings, and the lynchings of slavery and the pre-Civil Rights era, some white people seem to think they need to just sit back and let the police treat them the same way.

The police are supposed to serve and protect. They are not supposed to insult and harass and murder.

No. Choke holds are not illegal. Each law enforcement agency has their own rules.

That's right. They are. But if banned by a law enforcement agency for use by their officers, they can be held responsibility administratively for using one, even if no injury occurs.

If you did it to another individual, probably, unless you were defending yourself. Then it could be self defense.

For a police officer making an arrest of a suspect who is fighting him, good luck with the assault thing.
