"...Half a million human beings have passed through Cuba’s Gulag. Since Cuba’s total population is only around eleven million, that gives Castro’s despotism the highest political incarceration rate per capita on earth. There have been more than fifteen thousand executions by firing squad. Torture has been institutionalized; myriad human-rights organizations have documented the regime’s use of electric shock, dark coffin-sized isolation cells, and beatings to punish “anti-socialist elements.” The Castro regime’s barbarity is best epitomized by the Camilo Cienfuegos plan, the program of horrors followed in the forced-labor camp on the Isle of Pines. Forced to work almost naked, prisoners were made to cut grass with their teeth and to sit in latrine trenches for long periods of time. Torture is routine...."

Having seen mass incarceration as an opportunity for profit, the private prison industry grew rapidly, in lock-step with the US prison population, to the multi-billion dollar industry it is today. And leading this industry is Corrections Corporation of America (“CCA”), a publically-traded prison operator with a history of horrendous prison conditions and human rights abuses….

As this report will show throughout, the above examples are by no means unique in demonstrating how perverted the justice system can become when the profit motive is introduced. But this report is not meant to focus on the moral failings of for-profit prisons – it’s meant to focus on the financial failings.

The complaint lists a litany of such horrors, but here are a few highlights: rampant rapes. Placing prisoners in solitary confinement for weeks, months or even years at a time, where the only way to get a guard's attention in an emergency is to set a fire. Rat infestations so bad that vermin crawl over prisoners; sometimes, the rats are captured, put on leashes and sold as pets to the most severely mentally ill inmates. Many suicide attempts, some successful. The untreated mentally ill throw feces, scream, start fires, electrocute themselves and self-mutilate. Denying or delaying treatment for infections and even cancer. Stabbings, beatings and other acts of violence. Juveniles being housed with adults, including one 16-year-old who was sexually assaulted by his adult cell mate. Malnourishment and chronic hunger. Officers who deal with prisoners by using physical violence.

This is in America the "land of the free, home of the brave".

Torture is routine.

The horrifying experience of Armando Valladares, a Cuban poet who endured twenty-two years of torture and imprisonment for merely raising the issue of freedom, is a testament to the regime’s barbarity. Valladares’s memoir, Against All Hope, serves as Cuba’s version of Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag Archipelago. Valladares recounts how prisoners were beaten with bayonets, electric cables, and truncheons. He tells how he and other prisoners were forced to take “baths” in human feces and urine.[ii]

*Punching, slapping, and kicking detainees; jumping on their naked feet

*Forcibly arranging detainees in various sexually explicit positions for photographing

*Forcing naked male detainees to wear women’s underwear

*Forcing groups of male detainees to masturbate themselves while being photographed and videotaped

*Arranging naked male detainees in a pile and then jumping on them

*Positioning a naked detainee on a MRE Box, with a sandbag on his head, and attaching wires to his fingers, toes, and penis to simulate electric torture

*Placing a dog chain or strap around a naked detainee’s neck and having a female Soldier pose for a picture

*A male MP guard having sex with a female detainee

*Using military working dogs (without muzzles) to intimidate and frighten detainees, and in at least one case biting and severely injuring a detainee

*Breaking chemical lights and pouring the phosphoric liquid on detainees

*Sodomizing a detainee with a chemical light and perhaps a broom stick

    < snip >

And Barack Obama sounds like he has absolutely no intention of ever holding anyone accountable for what happened. The following is an excerpt from a statement that he just made regarding this terror report…

The “greatest force for freedom and human dignity”?

He has got to be kidding us.

Torture has been institutionalized here as well. Only we don't call it torture when we do it because we're "exceptional" people.

No doubt many would prefer a communist Cuban prison where tortures occur everyday everywhere to a model prison.

How come you're against all this stuff when the Cubans do it but you're okay with it when the USA and the Ukrainian coup government whom your recently supported does it?

How come you still live in the USA when you would be a big shot in Cuba?

How come you can't give a straight answer?

You're okay with torture and human rights abuses when Americans and Ukrainians are the perpetrators but not when the Cubans are?

How can this be? Either you're for torture and human rights abuses or you are against them.

Make up your mind, which is it?

Why don't you want to move to Cuba with white sandy beaches and most Afro-Cubans locked in dungeons?

Why don't you admit to your hypocrisy? It's obvious enough that everyone else can see it.

Communist Cuban crimes against humanity are on par with Stalinist communist crimes against humanity. I stand against communism and communist crimes against humanity. I say that Fidel and Raul are panders and child molesters.

Okay, I think I get it now. You're only against human rights violations when the communists commit them.

That makes sense because you have a habit of making excuses and covering for corporatists when they commit the same type of crimes against humanity.

It's noble and necessary when "our side" does it but it's a horrible crime when the "other side" does it.

I still don't understand how a thing can be right when "our side" does it but wrong when the "other side" does it.

Explain this to me because I just can't seem to wrap my mind around it.

If Cuba is so nice, why do American communists/leftists/progressives/liberals/Democrats refuse to move there?

Evidently it is just as nice as American unions to hear some people talk. I guess that I starting meeting Cuban refugees over 50 years ago so you could never sell me on the idea that the Castros and Che were not monsters of depravity.
